Description
Description:
Fosrenol (lanthanum carbonate) blocks phosphate from being absorbed by the body, enabling it to be excreted.
What is Fosrenol used for?
Fosrenol medication is a phosphate binder prescribed to reduce phosphate levels in individuals with end-stage renal disease. High phosphate levels can make it difficult for your body to absorb calcium, which can lead to serious health concerns.
Fosrenol Dosage:
Fosrenol chewable tablet is supplied in four dosage strengths to be administered orally: 250 mg, 500 mg, 750 mg, and Fosrenol 1000 mg tablets.
Adult Dosage for Renal Failure Hyperphosphatemia:
- Initial dose: 1500 mg orally each day, split into two doses with meals.
- Titrate in 750 mg/day increments every 2 to 3 weeks until a satisfactory serum phosphate level is achieved.
- Maximum daily dose: 4500 mg
Direction:
- Take this medication with food or just after you eat.
- Before swallowing a chewable pill, it must be thoroughly chewed or crushed. Do not take the capsule whole. If you have difficulties chewing the pill, tell your doctor.
- Mix a tiny amount of the oral powder with applesauce or another soft meal (oral powder will not dissolve in liquid). Without chewing, swallow immediately. The combination should not be saved for subsequent use.
- You may require regular blood tests when using this medication.
- Avoid moisture and heat, and store at room temperature.
Fosrenol Side Effects:
The following are some of the most common Fosrenol adverse effects:
- Stomach ache, nausea, and vomiting are all symptoms of an upset stomach.
- Constipation;
- Itchiness, rash;
- Chewing the medication caused tooth damage.
Caution:
- If you have a stomach ulcer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, any form of bowel blockage, or a history of colon cancer or intestinal surgery, notify your doctor before using Fosrenol.
- Before swallowing a chewable pill, make sure you chew it fully.
- Take this medication with food or just after you eat.
- Tell your doctor if you’re taking any other medications, including antibiotics, seizure medication, heart or blood pressure medication, or a blood thinner.
- If you are taking a thyroid supplement, wait at least 2 hours before or after taking this medication to take it. Thyroid medicine and lanthanum carbonate should not be used at the same time.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How does this medication work?
This is a phosphate binder. It binds to phosphates in meals and prevents them from being absorbed, lowering phosphorus levels and protecting your kidneys and bones.
What is the main ingredient in this medication?
Lanthanum Carbonate hydrate is included in this. The strong affinity of lanthanum ions, which are liberated from the carbonate salt in the acid environment of the stomach, for dietary phosphate determines the activity of lanthanum carbonate hydrate as a
phosphate binder. The formation of insoluble lanthanum phosphate decreases phosphate absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
