Indications
Butenafine topical is employed in the treatment of various fungal skin infections, including ringworm, athlete’s foot, and jock itch. It also addresses a skin condition called pityriasis (tinea versicolor), characterized by a fungal infection leading to lightening or darkening of the skin on the neck, chest, arms, or legs. Butenafine operates as an antifungal by inhibiting the growth of fungus.
Uses and Dosage
Apply this medication exclusively on the skin. Begin by cleaning and thoroughly drying the area to be treated. Use a thin layer of the medication, applying it to and around the affected area, and gently rub it in. Typically, this is done 1 to 2 times daily as per the directions on the product package. If your doctor has specifically prescribed this medication, adhere to their instructions. Remember to wash your hands after application, unless the treated area includes the hands.
Do not wrap, cover, or bandage the area unless your doctor instructs you to do so.
Avoid applying the medication in the eyes, nose, mouth, inside the vagina, or on the scalp. If accidental contact occurs in these areas, flush with plenty of water.
The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type of infection being addressed. Do not exceed the recommended frequency or duration, as doing so may heighten the risk of side effects.
Use the medication consistently at the same time(s) each day for optimal results. Continue using it until the full treatment period is completed, even if symptoms vanish after a few days. Halting the medication prematurely may lead to a recurrence of the infection.
If your condition worsens or does not improve after completing the treatment, inform your doctor.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- burning
- stinging
- irritation
- redness
- itching at the application site
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- blistering/swelling/oozing at the application site
- rash
- itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
- severe dizziness
- trouble breathing
- worsening of the skin condition
Caution
- Before starting this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to butenafine, allylamine antifungals, or any other substances. Inactive ingredients in the product may have the potential to trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
- Provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of athlete’s foot on the bottom/side of the foot.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when essential. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- The passage of this drug into breast milk is uncertain. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding to determine the appropriate course of action.

Can I use Mentax Cream more than once or twice a day?
Mentax Cream is usually recommended for use once a day, or it can be used twice a day for athlete’s foot. Using it more often than recommended is not guaranteed to make the medication work better, and can raise your risk of having side effects such as skin irritation.
Can I use Mentax Cream on my face?
Use Mentax Cream on your face only if your provider specifically tells you to do so, since the skin on your face tends to be more sensitive and is more likely to get unwanted side effects.
