Indications
Fosfomycin is an antibiotic prescribed for the treatment of bladder infections, specifically acute cystitis or lower urinary tract infections, in women. Its mechanism involves halting the growth of bacteria. Fosfomycin is not suitable for treating infections beyond the bladder, such as kidney infections.
Uses and Dosage
Follow your doctor’s instructions and take this medication orally, typically in the form of 1 packet (sachet) as a single dose.
Prior to ingestion, mix the contents with water. Pour the contents of 1 packet (sachet) into half a glass (4 ounces or 120 milliliters) of cold water and stir until dissolved. Do not use warm or hot water. Consume the entire mixture immediately.
You should notice an improvement in your symptoms within 2 to 3 days. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve after 3 days or if it worsens.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- nausea
- diarrhea
- headache
- vaginal itching
- runny nose
- back pain
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- fever
- rash
- joint pain
- swelling of the mouth or tongue
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
Caution
- Before taking fosfomycin, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have kidney disease.
- If you experience symptoms of a kidney infection such as pain in your side or lower back, fever, or chills, contact your doctor immediately. Your treatment plan may need adjustment.
- This medication may cause dizziness. Alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate this effect. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely.
- This product may contain sugar and/or aspartame. Use caution if you have diabetes, phenylketonuria (PKU), or any other condition requiring dietary restrictions. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice on using this product safely.
- Fosfomycin may reduce the efficacy of live bacterial vaccines such as the typhoid vaccine. Inform your healthcare professional that you are using fosfomycin before undergoing any immunizations or vaccinations.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- This drug passes into breast milk in small amounts but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

How long does Monurol take to work?
