Tetrabenazine is prescribed for managing chorea, which refers to sudden involuntary movements. These symptoms are often associated with Huntington’s disease, a hereditary condition leading to the gradual deterioration of nerve cells in the brain. Belonging to the category of medications known as vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) inhibitors, tetrabenazine functions by modulating the activity of specific natural compounds in the brain that impact nerve and muscle functions.
Uses and Dosage
Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking this medication, whether with or without food. Typically, treatment begins with a once-daily dose in the morning.
Over several weeks, your doctor may gradually increase your dosage to two or three times daily. This gradual adjustment helps determine the most effective dosage while minimizing side effects.
Your prescribed dosage depends on various factors including your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you’re taking. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all products you use, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements.

Side Effects

- shortness of breath
- restlessness
Caution
- Before taking tetrabenazine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, including allergies to tetrabenazine, deutetrabenazine, or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of breast cancer, liver issues, or certain heart conditions such as fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, or QT prolongation in the EKG.
- This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate these effects.
- Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely.
- During pregnancy, only use this medication if absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is uncertain whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using this medication.
