Description

Indications

Trimethoprim treats urinary tract infections. It is also used in combination with other drugs to treat certain types of pneumonia and traveler’s diarrhea. Trimethoprim is an antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication by mouth with or without food, following your doctor’s instructions, usually once or twice daily. The prescribed dosage is determined based on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment. In the case of children, the dosage is also influenced by their weight.

If you are using the liquid form of this medication, make sure to measure the dose carefully using a special measuring device or spoon. Do not use a household spoon, as it may not provide the correct dose.

For optimal effectiveness, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced intervals. To help remember, take the medication at the same time(s) every day.

Continue taking this medication until you have completed the full prescribed amount, even if your symptoms improve after a few days. Discontinuing the medication prematurely may lead to a resurgence of the infection.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens after several days.

Caution

  • Before taking trimethoprim, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, as this product may contain inactive ingredients that could cause allergic reactions or other issues.
  • Discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a certain type of anemia (due to folate deficiency), kidney disease, liver disease, vitamin deficiency, blood disorders, or mineral imbalances.
  • This medication may increase your sensitivity to the sun, so limit your time outdoors, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing. Notify your doctor if you experience sunburn or skin blisters/redness.
  • For individuals with diabetes, this product may affect blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar regularly and share the results with your doctor. Report any symptoms of low blood sugar promptly. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet.
  • Trimethoprim may interfere with the effectiveness of live bacterial vaccines (such as the typhoid vaccine). Inform your healthcare professional that you are using trimethoprim before undergoing any immunizations or vaccinations.
  • Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly mineral imbalances (high potassium blood level) and allergic reactions.
