What precautions should I follow when taking Cleocin/Clindamycin Hcl?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you are allergic to tartrazine if you have any other medical condition, such as allergies, diarrhea, kidney or liver disease

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Cleocin/Clindamycin Hcl?

Diarrhea, cramps, stomach pain, and bloody stools have been reported with nearly all antibiotics, including this medicine, and may range from mild to life threatening. Report any of these symptoms to your health care provider. Clindamycin kills susceptible bacteria by stopping the production of essential proteins needed by the bacteria to survive. Topical clindamycin treats acne by killing susceptible bacteria causing acne and reducing the amount of free fatty acids that irritate the surface of the skin.

What are the side effects of Cleocin/Clindamycin Hcl?

Most severe:  Severe allergic reaction (redness, itching, swelling, hives, difficulty breathing); bloody diarrhea or stools; severe stomach cramps; yellowing of skin or eyes.

Most common:  Stomach pain; diarrhea; nausea; vomiting; rash; hives; infrequent urination.

Other:  Anal itching; mouth or tongue sores; sore throat; unpleasant taste; itching; ringing in the ears; feeling of a whirling motion; joint pain.

How should I take Cleocin/Clindamycin Hcl?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. This medicine should be taken with a full glass of water. If severe diarrhea, stomach cramps/pain or bloody stools occur, contact your doctor at once. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect. Do not treat diarrhea without consulting a doctor. Continue use until all of the prescribed medicine has been taken. Failure to take all of this medicine may not completely eliminate bacteria, and may allow infection to return. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. Some of these products may contain the dye tartrazine (FD&C Yellow No. 5), which can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals. Talk with health care provider or pharmacist. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medicines without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
