What precautions should I follow when taking Desowen Ointment/Desonide?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine or dietary supplement if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Desowen Ointment/Desonide?

Use this medicine with caution on leisions close to the eye. Prolonged use of this medicine may cause skin wasting. Do not use this medicine excessively on large areas of skin for prolonged periods of time. Do not use this medicine for children under 12 years of age.

What are the side effects of Desowen Ointment/Desonide?

Most severe:  Failure of wounds to heal.

Most common:  Stinging; burning.

Other:  Irritation; skin rash; worsening of condition; peeling of the skin; itching; flushing or redness; dryness/scaliness; inflamed hair follicles; acne; loss of skin color; inflamed skin around the mouth; skin wasting; cracking; streaks in the skin.

How should I take Desowen Ointment/Desonide?

How much medicine you are taking and how often it is taken depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. This medicine is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes. Apply a thin film of cream to the affected area(s) as directed by your health care provider. Do not cover the treated area(s) with bandages or other dressings unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Stop use of this medicine and contact your health care provider if irritation occurs or if symptoms do not improve after 2 weeks of use. If a second skin infection develops, contact your doctor. Contact your health care provider if any of the following side effects occur: Stinging; burning; irritation; skin rash; worsening of condition; peeling of the skin; itching; flushing or redness; dryness/scaliness. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not take over-the-counter or prescription medications or dietary supplements without talking with your health care provider. Patients with other medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine or change the dose unless advised to do so by your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised to by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider.
