It effectively mitigates symptoms such as itching, flaking, irritation, and redness on the scalp. Selenium sulfide is also utilized for a skin condition causing discoloration known as tinea versicolor. Categorized as an anti-infective medication, it operates by impeding the growth of the yeast responsible for the infection, providing relief from associated symptoms.
Uses and Dosage
This medication is designed for skin application only. Some brands may require shaking before use, so refer to your product package to determine if shaking is necessary. Before applying the medication, remove any jewelry to prevent potential damage.
Avoid contact with the eyes, inside the nose or mouth, and any areas of broken or inflamed skin, as it may cause irritation. In case of accidental contact, flush the affected area with plenty of water.
For treating dandruff or scalp dermatitis, follow the manufacturer’s instructions or your doctor’s guidance. Wet the scalp, massage the medication onto the wet scalp, leave it on for 2-3 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly. Some brands may require a second application, so check your product package for specific instructions. Ensure thorough rinsing, especially if you have bleached, tinted, or permed hair. Typically, this medication is used 1 or 2 times per week for dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, or less frequently for dandruff maintenance.
For tinea versicolor treatment, apply selenium sulfide to the affected skin, lather with a small amount of water, leave it on for 10 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly. If the medication touches genital areas or skin folds, rinse well with water to prevent irritation. This medication is usually applied once daily for 7 days, or as directed by your doctor.
After using selenium sulfide, wash your hands.
Adhere to the recommended application duration and frequency; leaving it on for longer or using it more frequently than directed will not expedite improvement and may increase side effects.
If your condition worsens or fails to improve, promptly inform your doctor or pharmacist.
