Avanafil is prescribed to address erectile dysfunction (ED), commonly known as impotence, characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection in men. Avanafil belongs to a category of medications referred to as phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. Its mechanism of action involves enhancing blood circulation to the penis specifically during sexual stimulation, which can lead to the occurrence of an erection.

Uses and Dosage

Avanafil is available in tablet form and should be taken orally. Depending on the prescribed dose, the recommended administration instructions vary:

If you are taking the 100-mg or 200-mg doses, avanafil is typically ingested with or without food, as required, approximately 15 minutes before engaging in sexual activity.

For those prescribed the 50-mg dose, avanafil is usually taken with or without food, as needed, around 30 minutes prior to sexual activity.

Ensure that you do not exceed one dose of avanafil within a 24-hour period. Adhere to the prescribed dosage precisely, avoiding both overuse and underuse, and refrain from taking it more frequently than your doctor has instructed.

Typically, your doctor will initiate your treatment with a standard avanafil dose and may subsequently adjust it based on your response to the medication. Should you find that avanafil is not delivering the desired results or if you experience any side effects, promptly inform your doctor.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • headache
  • flushing
  • back pain

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours
  • sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes (see below for more information)
  • sudden hearing loss (see below for more information)
  • ringing in the ears
  • dizziness
  • rash
  • itching
  • swollen eyelids

Prior to starting avanafil, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, whether to Avanafil itself or other substances. This medication may contain inert components capable of triggering allergic reactions or other potential issues.

Before commencing this medication, provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, with particular attention to the following factors: recent heart problems, a history of stroke within the past six months, kidney disease requiring dialysis, liver disease, high or low blood pressure, dehydration, conditions affecting the penis, prior episodes of painful or prolonged erections (priapism), underlying conditions that may increase the risk of priapism, eye problems, bleeding disorders, or active stomach ulcers.

This medication can induce dizziness or cause changes in vision. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Avoid activities that require alertness or clear vision, such as driving or operating machinery, until you are certain you can do so safely.

Avanafil is not typically prescribed for women, and it is unlikely to be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you have any questions about this medication in relation to your specific circumstances, consult your doctor for guidance.
