Individuals taking levodopa for Parkinson’s often encounter challenges with the effects of levodopa wearing off between scheduled doses, leading to the return or exacerbation of symptoms. Tolcapone operates by inhibiting a specific natural substance responsible for breaking down levodopa in the body. This action extends the duration of levodopa’s effectiveness in the system, preventing it from wearing off before the next scheduled dose.
Uses and Dosage
Tolcapone is available in tablet form for oral administration and is typically taken three times a day. It is often prescribed in conjunction with levodopa and carbidopa by your doctor.
Adhere to the prescribed directions for taking tolcapone without deviation—neither exceeding nor reducing the dosage or frequency without your doctor’s approval.
To derive the maximum benefit from this medication, use it consistently and take it at the same times each day.
While tolcapone effectively manages symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, it does not cure the condition. Continue taking tolcapone even if you feel well. Do not discontinue the medication abruptly without consulting your doctor, as sudden cessation may result in high fever and confusion.

Caution

- Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of alcoholism, low blood pressure, severe movement problems related to Parkinson’s disease, liver problems, mental/mood disorders, a history of a specific muscle problem (rhabdomyolysis), or a history of fever and confusion caused by any drug.
- This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Refrain from activities requiring alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you can do so safely.
- Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly drowsiness, confusion, and hallucinations.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

How is Tasmar different from carbidopa/levodopa?
Carbidopa and levodopa is a first-choice treatment option for Parkinson’s that can be taken alone. On the other hand, Tasmar should only be taken in combination with carbidopa and levodopa, if the latter alone isn’t working.
Can you drink alcohol with Tasmar?
It’s best to avoid alcohol while you’re taking Tasmar, as they can both cause serious liver problems, confusion, sleepiness, and dizziness.
