Tenofovir alafenamide is prescribed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection, which is a viral liver infection. It operates by halting or reducing the virus’s replication. Left untreated, chronic hepatitis B infection can result in severe liver complications, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Uses and Dosage

Before commencing treatment with this medication, your doctor will conduct an HIV infection test. If you have both hepatitis B and HIV infections, do not use tenofovir alafenamide on its own, as this may complicate the management of your HIV infection. Combination drug therapy is always recommended for HIV treatment.

Take this medication orally with food, following your doctor’s instructions, typically once a day. On days when you undergo dialysis, take your daily dose of this medication after your dialysis session.

The dosage is determined by your medical condition, how you respond to treatment, and any other medications you may be using. Make sure to inform your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products.

To achieve the best results, take this medication at regular intervals. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.

If you vomit within one hour after taking a dose, take another dose of the medication. However, if vomiting occurs more than one hour after your dose, refrain from taking an additional dose. Instead, take your next scheduled dose as usual.

Do not exceed or decrease the prescribed dosage, and do not discontinue the medication, even temporarily, unless instructed by your doctor. Failing to follow these guidelines may worsen the infection, lead to treatment-resistant strains, or exacerbate side effects.
