Higher strength fluticasone nasal spray is utilized to alleviate symptoms of nonallergic rhinitis, including sneezing and a runny or congested nose, unrelated to allergies. This medication is also prescribed for treating nasal polyps, characterized by the swelling of the nasal lining. Fluticasone belongs to a class of medications known as corticosteroids, functioning by inhibiting the release of certain natural substances responsible for allergy symptoms.
Uses and Dosage
Fluticasone is available as a liquid for nasal spray, both in prescription and nonprescription forms. When using nonprescription fluticasone nasal spray to alleviate hay fever and allergy symptoms, it is typically administered once daily in each nostril. For prescription fluticasone nasal spray targeting nonallergic rhinitis, the usual application involves spraying each nostril one or two times a day. In the case of prescription fluticasone nasal spray aimed at treating nasal polyps, it is usually applied in each nostril twice a day.
Follow the prescribed directions precisely, avoiding excess or insufficient use, and adhere to the frequency specified on the package label or by your doctor.
Fluticasone nasal spray is intended exclusively for nasal use. Avoid ingesting the nasal spray, and exercise caution to prevent unintentional spraying into your eyes or mouth.

Once the indicated number of sprays has been reached, the remaining liquid in the bottle may not contain the correct medication dosage. Keep track of your spray count and discard the bottle after reaching the specified number, even if liquid remains.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- severe face pain

- swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
- hoarseness
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- wheezing
- feeling faint
- severe or frequent nosebleeds
Caution
- Before initiating the use of fluticasone, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to it or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other adverse effects.
- Prior to using this medication, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have recently experienced nose issues such as injury, ulcers, or surgery, or if you have a history of infections (including tuberculosis and herpes eye infection) or specific eye conditions like glaucoma and cataracts. Additionally, disclose any existing liver disease.
- Exercise caution around individuals with easily transmissible infections (e.g., chickenpox, COVID-19, measles, flu). Consult your doctor if you have been exposed to an infection or for further details.
- In rare instances, prolonged use of corticosteroid medications can diminish your body’s ability to respond to physical stress. Before undergoing surgery, emergency treatment, or in the event of a severe illness or injury, inform your doctor or dentist if you are currently using this medication or have used it within the past few months.
- While it is unlikely, the extended use of this medication in children may temporarily impede their growth. Regular check-ups with a doctor are advised to monitor your child’s height.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only if absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- The passage of this drug into breast milk is not well-established. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
