Classified as a protease inhibitor, nelfinavir operates by reducing the quantity of HIV in the bloodstream. While nelfinavir does not provide a cure for HIV, it can lower the likelihood of progressing to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and minimize the occurrence of HIV-related complications, including severe infections or cancer.
Uses and Dosage
Nelfinavir is available in tablet and powder forms for oral consumption. Typically, it is taken two to three times a day with food. Maintain a consistent schedule by taking nelfinavir around the same times daily.
Follow the prescribed directions precisely, avoiding any deviations such as taking more or less than recommended, or increasing the frequency without your doctor’s approval.
For those who find it challenging to swallow the tablet, an alternative method involves placing it in a glass, dissolving it in a small amount of water, mixing the liquid thoroughly, and consuming it immediately. Rinse the glass with additional water and swallow the entire mixture to ensure you’ve taken the full dose.
Nelfinavir oral powder can be added to water, milk, formula, soy milk, or dietary supplements. Mix the powder well, consume the entire liquid promptly to complete the prescribed dose. The prescription label will specify the number of scoops of nelfinavir powder to add to the liquid. If not consumed immediately, store the mixture in the refrigerator and take it within 6 hours. Avoid combining nelfinavir oral powder with acidic foods or juices (such as orange juice, apple juice, or applesauce), and do not mix nelfinavir with water directly in the original container.
It’s crucial to understand that while nelfinavir manages HIV infection, it does not provide a cure. Even if you feel well, continue taking nelfinavir as prescribed. Avoid discontinuing the medication without consulting your doctor, as stopping or skipping doses may result in the worsening of your infection or the development of resistance to medications.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- This medication passes into breast milk and may have adverse effects on a nursing infant. It is not recommended to breastfeed while using this medication, as breast milk may also transmit HIV.

What should I do if I forget to take my dose of Viracept?
