Ketotifen is categorized as an asthma medication, and when taken daily in conjunction with other antiasthma medications, it has the potential to decrease the frequency, severity, and duration of asthma symptoms or attacks in children. It may also result in a lowered daily need for other antiasthma medications. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of specific substances in the body that are recognized for inducing inflammation and asthma symptoms.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, as directed by your doctor, typically twice daily. Ensure you do not crush or chew the tablets, as doing so may increase the likelihood of side effects.
The dosage is determined based on your age and response to treatment. Your doctor might initiate treatment with a lower dose and gradually adjust it to minimize potential side effects, such as drowsiness.
Consistently use this medication to derive maximum benefits. To help with consistency, take it at the same times each day.
Avoid discontinuing the use of this medication or altering your dose without consulting your doctor. Abrupt cessation of the drug may exacerbate certain conditions. If a change is necessary, your doctor may recommend a gradual reduction in dosage.
This medication doesn’t produce immediate effects. It may take 2 to 3 months for noticeable results. Your doctor may also make adjustments to the dosage of your other asthma medications while you are taking ketotifen. If you are on regular corticosteroids (such as prednisone, fluticasone), do not stop using them and do not substitute them with ketotifen.

Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- drowsiness
- dry mouth
- feeling excited
- increased appetite
- irritability
- nervousness
- sleep disturbances
- slight dizziness
- weight gain
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- flu-like symptoms
- puffy eyelid(s)
- unusual nosebleeds
- coughing blood
- bleeding gums
- skin rashes and itching
- increased need to urinate
- burning sensation when urinating
- seizures
- signs of a severe skin reaction such as blistering, peeling, or a rash covering a large area of the body
Caution
- Before taking ketotifen, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, whether it’s to ketotifen or other substances. Inactive ingredients in the product may trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have diabetes or seizure disorders (such as epilepsy).
- This drug may induce dizziness or drowsiness. Combining it with alcohol or marijuana can heighten these effects. Refrain from activities requiring alertness, such as driving, using machinery, riding a bicycle, until you can do so safely.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is uncertain if this medication passes into breast milk. Before breastfeeding, consult with your doctor to evaluate potential risks and benefits.
