Description

Indications

Abacavir is employed in combination with other medications to effectively treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Categorized under nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), abacavir operates by reducing the quantity of HIV in the bloodstream. While it does not provide a cure for HIV, it plays a crucial role in diminishing the likelihood of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related conditions, including serious infections or cancer.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication orally, with or without food, as directed by your doctor, typically once or twice daily. If using the liquid form, carefully measure the dose with a specialized measuring device or spoon; avoid using a household spoon to ensure accurate dosing.

The prescribed dosage is contingent on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment. For children, the dosage is also determined by their weight.

If you pause abacavir usage, even briefly, and then resume, there’s an elevated risk of experiencing a severe, potentially fatal allergic reaction. Ensure you refill your medication before running out and avoid discontinuing treatment unless instructed by your doctor. Before restarting abacavir, consult your doctor or pharmacist, and ensure you have easy access to medical care.

It’s crucial to adhere to the prescribed regimen, taking this medication (as well as other HIV medications) precisely as directed by your doctor. Do not skip doses, increase your dose, take it more frequently than prescribed, or stop taking it (or other HIV medicines) even briefly without your doctor’s approval. Deviating from the prescribed regimen may lead to increased virus levels, complicating the infection (resistance), or exacerbating side effects.

For optimal effectiveness, take this medication at evenly spaced intervals. To help with consistency, take it at the same time(s) every day.

Caution

  • Before taking abacavir, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, as the product might contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
  • Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have liver problems (such as hepatitis B or C, or cirrhosis), kidney problems, or engage in alcohol use.
  • Abacavir may heighten the risk of a heart attack. Engage in a discussion with your doctor about the risks and benefits of the treatment and ways to mitigate the risk of heart disease.
