Indications
Lidocaine, when applied to the skin, is utilized to alleviate itching and pain associated with specific skin conditions such as minor burns, scrapes, eczema, and insect bites. Some formulations of this medication can reduce discomfort or pain during certain medical procedures or exams. Lidocaine functions as a local anesthetic, inducing temporary numbness and loss of sensation in the skin and mucous membranes. This helps alleviate pain and itching in the affected areas.
Uses and Dosage
Before applying to the skin, cleanse and dry the affected area according to the provided instructions. Administer a thin layer of the medication to the affected skin area, typically 2 to 3 times daily or as per guidance.
When using the spray, ensure the canister is well-shaken before application. Hold the canister 3-5 inches (8-13 centimeters) away from the affected area and spray until it becomes wet. In the case of facial application, spray the medication onto your hand and then apply it to the face. Avoid spraying near the eyes, nose, or mouth.
For the foam variant, shake the canister thoroughly before use. Dispense the foam onto your hand and apply it to the affected area.
Avoid using the product on large body areas, covering with waterproof bandages or plastic, or applying heat unless specifically instructed by your doctor, as these actions may heighten the risk of serious side effects.
After usage, promptly wash your hands unless you are treating a hand area. Take care to prevent the product from coming into contact with your eyes, nose, or ears. In case of accidental exposure, rinse the affected area immediately with clean water.
The prescribed dosage depends on your medical condition and response to treatment. Adhere to the recommended usage and refrain from using more product, increasing application frequency, or prolonging the duration beyond the specified guidelines. If there is an infection or sore in the treatment area, consult your doctor before using this medication.
Seek medical attention promptly if your condition persists, worsens, or if you suspect a serious medical issue.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- numbness in places where the medicine is accidentally applied
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- severe burning
- stinging
- irritation at the injection site
- swelling or redness
- sudden dizziness or drowsiness after application
- confusion
- blurred vision
- ringing in the ears
- unusual sensations of temperature
Caution
- Prior to using lidocaine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to lidocaine, other amide type anesthetics (such as bupivacaine, prilocaine), or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Before commencing this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have broken skin or an infection in the intended lidocaine application area, a history of heart disease, liver disease, or a specific blood disorder known as methemoglobinemia.
- If you are scheduled for an MRI test, notify the testing personnel that you are using lidocaine. Some formulations of this medication may contain metals capable of causing severe burns during an MRI, and it should not be applied before MRI imaging. Seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist regarding your specific brand.
- Children may exhibit increased sensitivity to the side effects of this drug.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- While this medication can pass into breast milk, it is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding to ensure the safety of both you and your baby.
