Indications

Desonide topical is employed to alleviate the redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort associated with various skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema. Belonging to the class of medications known as topical corticosteroids, desonide functions by activating natural substances in the skin to diminish swelling, redness, and itching.

Uses and Dosage

Desonide is available in various forms, including cream, ointment, gel, foam, and lotion, for application to the skin.

Typically, it is applied two to four times daily, aiming for consistency in timing. Follow the instructions on your prescription label meticulously, and seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist on any aspects you find unclear.

This medication is exclusively for skin use. Prevent contact with eyes, nose, or mouth, and do not swallow it. Avoid application in genital and rectal areas, as well as in skin creases and armpits unless directed by your doctor.

To apply desonide topical, use a small amount of ointment, cream, gel, or lotion to cover the affected skin area with a thin, even film, gently rubbing it in.

Desonide foam is flammable. Stay away from open fire, flames, and refrain from smoking while applying it and for a short period afterward.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

• stinging, burning, irritation, peeling, dryness, and redness of the skin
• itching
• acne
• tiny red bumps or rash around the mouth
• small white or red bumps on the skin
• change in skin color

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

• redness, swelling, oozing pus or other signs of skin infection in the place where you applied desonide
• severe rash

Caution

• Before using desonide, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies, whether to desonide itself, other corticosteroids (such as hydrocortisone, prednisone), or any other substances. Inactive ingredients in the product may also trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
• Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have poor blood circulation, diabetes, immune system problems, or other skin conditions like rosacea or perioral dermatitis.
• Avoid using this medication if there is an existing infection or sore in the intended treatment area.
• Children may be more sensitive to excessive corticosteroid medication effects; consult your doctor for more information.
• During pregnancy, use this medication only when necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
• While it’s unknown if this medication, when applied to the skin, passes into breast milk, similar drugs taken orally do pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
• If using during breastfeeding, avoid applying the medication to the breast/nipple area to prevent the infant from swallowing it.
