Indications
Ophthalmic epinastine is employed to prevent eye itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis is a condition characterized by itchy, swollen, red, and teary eyes when exposed to specific airborne substances.
Epinastine belongs to a class of medications known as antihistamines. Its mechanism of action involves preventing the release of natural substances that trigger allergic reactions in the eyes.
Uses and Dosage
Ophthalmic epinastine is available as a liquid solution to be instilled in the eyes. Typically, it is administered twice a day. Use epinastine eye drops consistently at approximately the same times each day, usually in the morning and evening.
Use epinastine eye drops precisely as directed, avoiding deviations such as using more or less than prescribed or using them more frequently than instructed by your doctor.
Epinastine eye drops are intended solely for use in the eyes, and they should not be swallowed.
To effectively control the itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis, it is crucial to use epinastine eye drops regularly. They may not be as effective if used only when symptoms are present. Continue using epinastine eye drops even if you are feeling well, and do not discontinue them without consulting your doctor.
Exercise caution when applying epinastine eye drops to ensure that the bottle’s tip does not come into contact with your eyes, fingers, face, or any surfaces. If the tip does touch another surface, there is a risk of introducing bacteria into the eye drops. The use of contaminated eye drops may lead to serious eye damage or loss of vision. If you suspect contamination of your eye drops, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:
- Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
- Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
- Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
- Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
- Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
- Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
- Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
- Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
- Wash hands to remove any residual medication.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

- fever, chills, and other signs of infection
Caution
- Before using epinastine, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Inactive ingredients in the product may trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
- Provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist.
- If you wear contact lenses, consult your doctor regarding the use of contact lenses when your eyes are red or irritated.
- Following the application of this drug, your vision may become temporarily blurred. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring clear vision until you can do so safely.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is unknown whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
