Indications
Mometasone topical is employed to alleviate the redness, swelling, itching, inflammation, and discomfort associated with various skin conditions. These conditions include psoriasis, a skin disease characterized by the formation of red, scaly patches on certain areas of the body, and eczema, a skin disorder that leads to dryness, itchiness, and the development of red, scaly rashes. Mometasone belongs to a class of medications known as corticosteroids. Its mechanism of action involves activating natural substances in the skin to mitigate swelling, redness, and itching.
Uses and Dosage
Mometasone is available as a cream, ointment, and lotion for application on the skin, typically once a day. Apply it at the same time every day.
Use mometasone precisely as directed, avoiding application of more or less than prescribed or using it more frequently than instructed by your doctor. Refrain from applying it to other areas of your body or using it to treat other skin conditions unless specifically directed by your doctor.
You should observe improvement in your skin condition within the first 2 weeks of treatment. If your symptoms do not improve during this period, contact your doctor.
To use mometasone cream or ointment, apply a small amount to cover the affected skin area with a thin film.
For the lotion, place a few drops on the affected areas and massage lightly until it disappears.
This medication is exclusively for use on the skin. Avoid letting mometasone topical come into contact with your eyes or mouth, and do not swallow it. Refrain from using it on the face, genital and rectal areas, and in skin creases and armpits unless directed by your doctor.
Do not apply other skin preparations on the treated area without consulting your doctor.
Avoid wrapping or bandaging the treated area unless your doctor advises you to do so, as it may increase side effects.
Do not use on a child’s diaper area unless directed by your doctor, and avoid using tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants, as it may increase side effects.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- burning, itching, irritation, redness, or dryness of the skin
- acne
- skin sores
- tiny red bumps or rash around the mouth
- small white or red bumps on the skin
- bruising or shiny skin
- changes in skin color
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- severe skin rash
- redness, swelling, or other signs of skin infection in the place where you applied mometasone
Caution
- Before using mometasone, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. Inactive ingredients in the product may cause allergic reactions or other problems.
- Disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have poor blood circulation, diabetes, or immune system problems.
- Corticosteroids may worsen skin infections and make them more challenging to treat. Inform your doctor if you have a skin infection so that it can be addressed appropriately. Report promptly to your doctor if your condition does not improve or if you experience worsening skin symptoms.
- In rare instances, prolonged use of corticosteroid medications over large skin areas or an extended period may make it more challenging for your body to respond to physical stress. Before undergoing surgery or emergency treatment, or if you experience a serious illness or injury, inform your doctor or dentist if you are using this medication or have used it within the past few months.
- While it is unlikely, long-term use of this medication may temporarily slow down a child’s growth. Regularly consult the doctor so that your child’s height can be monitored.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is unknown whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Can you use Elocon Lotion on your face?
Elocon Lotion shouldn’t be used on the face unless directed by your provider. Additionally, you shouldn’t use this medication on any area of the body where the skin is more sensitive, such as around the groin area or near your eyes. This is because Elocon Lotion is a medium-strength steroid and applying it to sensitive skin can raise the risk for side effects, such as skin redness, acne, and excessive hair growth.
Can Elocon Lotion be used for acne?
Topical steroids aren’t typically used for acne. In fact, there have been reports of people developing acne as a side effect after starting Elocon Lotion.
