Indications
Benzoyl peroxide products are employed for the treatment of mild to moderate acne. In the context of acne treatment, benzoyl peroxide functions by diminishing the presence of acne-causing bacteria and inducing dryness and peeling of the skin. Certain brands of benzoyl peroxide are also utilized in the treatment of a specific skin condition known as rosacea.
In cases of rosacea, benzoyl peroxide may assist in alleviating symptoms such as pimples and bumps on the face.
Uses and Dosage
Benzoyl peroxide is available in cleansing liquid or bar, lotion, cream, and gel formulations for application on the skin.
Typically, benzoyl peroxide is used once or twice daily. It is recommended to start with once daily application to observe how your skin reacts to the medication.
Use benzoyl peroxide precisely as directed; do not exceed or reduce the recommended dosage or frequency without your doctor’s guidance.
When using this medication for the first time, apply a small amount of the benzoyl peroxide product to one or two small areas you wish to treat for the initial 3 days. If there is no adverse reaction or discomfort, proceed to use the product as directed on the package or prescription label.
For the cleansing liquid and bar, use them to wash the affected area according to the provided instructions.
To use the lotion, cream, or gel, start by washing the affected skin areas and gently patting them dry with a towel. Then, apply a small amount of benzoyl peroxide and rub it in gently.
Avoid any substances that may irritate your skin, such as abrasive soaps or cleansers, alcohol-containing products, drying cosmetics or soaps, medicated cosmetics, and exposure to sunlight or sunlamps, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
It may take 4 to 6 weeks to observe the effects of this medication. If your acne does not improve within this time frame, contact your doctor.
Ensure that the medication does not come into contact with your eyes, mouth, or nose.
Do not use benzoyl peroxide on children under 12 years of age without consulting a doctor.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- tingling
- slight stinging
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- burning, blistering, redness, or swelling of the area of the treated area
- rash
- hives
- itching
- throat tightness
- difficulty breathing
- feeling faint
- swelling of the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
Caution
- Before using benzoyl peroxide, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, as this product may contain inactive ingredients, such as perfumes, that could trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
- Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication.
- This medication may heighten your sensitivity to the sun. Limit your sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen along with protective clothing when outdoors. Inform your doctor promptly if you experience sunburn or skin blisters/redness.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only if absolutely necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It is uncertain whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
