Take One Step Back

Some of us may recall a time when we relied on the advice of our parents to get us through childhood. More specifically, the advice that told us we must “step back and walk away” from bullies and our problems. Well apparently Mum knew better than we thought, because recent studies have proven that walking backwards increases and sharpens our thinking.

Walking and running backwards is already a huge phenomenon in Japan. They believe that running backwards burns more calories than running forward, and is better on the knee joints. Others are more cautious about being in reverse, and choose to stretch backwards instead. Many of the Japanese believe that stretching backwards (standing straight and reaching your arms above your head and behind you, instead of touching your toes) will keep your spine straight and prolongs life. Even if the Japanese methods have yet to be approved, researchers in the Netherlands have found evidence that the trend may be beneficial after all.

Forget putting your foot down during conflict or problems, just step back. According to Severine Koch, PhD, Radboud University, Netherlands, “Whenever you encounter a difficult situation, stepping backward may boost your capability to deal with it effectively,”. Koch and colleagues were interested in the mental effects of approach, versus avoidance, they hypothesized that the brain is usually more alert when it is defense mode (avoidance mode), so they set to work in researching their theory.

A group of students were asked to read a color word that sometimes printed in matching ink (example – the word “green” printed in green ink.) They were asked to read the color of the ink while stepping forwards, backwards, and sideways. It was easy when the color of the ink matched the word, but when they became more difficult, (example – the word “black” was written in blue ink) and the students had to recite the color of the ink while stepping forwards, backwards, and sideways, the reaction time of those stepping backwards was the quickest. “Backward locomotion appears to be a very powerful trigger to mobilize cognitive resource”, Koch and colleagues wrote after discovering that the reaction time for those stepping backwards was much greater than those stepping in other directions.

Next time you are faced with a problem, don’t stand your ground – back up! The solution may be behind you.

Is Texting Causing More Problems Than Just Sore Thumbs?

Filed under: cell phone,text message,text messaging,texting,Uncategorized — robertprice @ 6:07 pm

Texting has become more and more popular among adolescence these days. Kids often text during class while their teacher is giving them a lesson, or at night when they should be asleep. But is all this texting causing a greater risk than the occasional thumb cramp? Yes.

In the fourth quarter of 2008, American teenagers were sending out an average of 2272 text messages per month, almost 80 messages a day, more than double the number of text messages from a year earlier. This significant increase in texting is leading many experts to suggest that such frequent texting causes anxiety, distraction in school, falling grades, repetitive stress injury and sleep deprivation.

I have known kids that go to school and say they text all the time during class because their teachers are “boring.” Maybe if they actually tried to pay attention to the lesson they might find it more interesting. Instead, I have witnessed these former honor roll students that would be talked about for hours by their parents, turn into these slacker kids that barely pass their classes.

Additionally, psychiatrists suggest that due to late night texting many teenagers will develop sleep deprivation. This age group has already been found very common to develop sleep deprivation and texting will certainly not help them.

However, texting does provide some positives. For example, connectedness is one of these positive outcomes to texting. It allows many people to communicate and stay in touch with each other while being separated for varying lengths of time. This strengthens bonds between friends and promotes companionship.

Perhaps, adults and teenagers can come to some sort of compromise. A plan of sorts, that allows teenagers to have their cell phones and texting privileges, but not during school, or late at night during the week. This would hopefully raise the grades of the teenagers, but still allow them to feel as if they are not being punished. As for the “cell phone curfew,” this is to allow the teen to obtain adequate rest.

America, Depressed and Troubled

Depression is an illness that is plaguing more and more people each year, even I can say that I have a few friends and loved ones that suffer from depression. Depression can be caused by many different things. You could have lost your job, had an argument with someone, broken up with your significant other, had a family member pass away. Many people describe depression as a black curtain falling over everything, leaving them without energy and making it difficult to concentrate, or causing the person to become quite irritable. Yet, many people do not seek help when they need it, even though treatment is proven to help.

In a blog I was reading earlier today I stumbled upon a woman named Susan, at http://his-hers.ozzieblackcat.com who described in a blog called “Impersonal and Disconnected” about some of the things that trigger her depression, and things that help her get through depression. Susan says, “When I feel disconnected from someone I love then I feel sad and sometimes depressed… I hope you let those you love know how much they mean to you. Try to interact on a personal level so they don’t feel disconnected. If you are fortunate, those you love will be making these efforts toward you as well.

I found this quite moving due to the fact that most people take anti-depressants, or seek therapy, but this women simply asks for the love and support of those she loves. Now don’t get me wrong, I am in no way smashing anti-depressants or therapy because they definitely do help with depression, but if people suffering from depression could focus on the love they receive from someone like a parent, sibling, friend, or anyone else, perhaps more people would be able to conquer their own depression.

Women More at Risk from Smoking

By now, almost everyone should know the effects that smoking causes to a persons health. However, a recent study shows that smoking actually causes more harm to women. Women who smoke cigarettes were shown to develop lung disease earlier than males who smoke.

The study looked at 954 current and past smokers who had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The findings showed that women, who are younger than 60 with COPD had worse lung function than men their age. Additionally, women who are classified as light-smokers had developed more severe disease than males who are light-smokers.

If you are sitting there thinking that just because you only have a couple of cigarettes a day means you will be fine, you are very sadly mistaken. The low-exposure group in the study discovered that half of the women in the group with severe COPD.

Smoking causes many other negative effects to the body, like cancer, or increased risk of diabetes. Most of us know that smoking isn’t the best thing for our bodies, but at the same time trying to quit may be one of the hardest things to do for some people. One way that may be successful for many is to find a reason to quit.

Some people may know that they could get lung cancer, but may not consider quitting until they see, with their own eyes what lung cancer can do. These people need visual aids to aid them in kicking the habit. Other people need to see what their habit is doing to those around them. These people need to know what their smoking can do to their family, their pets.

For those that still have trouble quitting there are many products that can help, from gum to patches, even inhalers. Try and take a minute to think about what you are doing to those you care about.

Do Coffee Drinkers Have a Lower Risk of Dementia?

If you are anything like me you have to have that cup of coffee in the morning. Until I bought a coffee machine with one of those nifty built in timers, that pre-programs the machine to start at a specific time, mornings were not exactly my favorite time of the day. I would have to force my self from under the blanket and crawl on my hands and knees, just barely reaching the coffee machine in time. However, my fellow coffee lovers there may be more good news to these morning cravings.

In a study based in Finland, researches were able to determine that drinking coffee can lower the risk of getting dementia. Dementia is a problem in the brain that causes a person to have a more difficult time remembering, learning and communicating. Additionally, it can change a person’s mood and personality. At first, memory loss and trouble thinking clearly may bother the person who has dementia. Later, disruptive behavior and other problems may begin. Furthermore, a person who has dementia may not be aware of these problems.

There were a total of 1049 people that participated in this study during an average of a 21 year period. The volunteers were organized into three different groups based on daily coffee consumption, low (0-2 cups), moderate (3-5 cups), and high (over 5 cups). Those that drank between 3 and 5 cups of coffee daily were found to have a 65 percent less likely to develop dementia when compared to those that drank only 2 cups or less. Those in the over 5 cup category also had lower chances to develop dementia however, researches say that there were not enough in the “high” category to confirm the results.

The wonderful effects of coffee don’t stop here either. Coffee, which I seem to remember stealing from my mother when I was about 4 years of age, appears to prevent or lower the risk of many other health problems. These consist of diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and colon cancer. Additionally, coffee can lighten your mood, relieve headache’s, and even fight cavities. Now all this writing on my drink of choice has made me thirsty, off to the kitchen I go.

How Dance Can Help Your Health

Filed under: dance,exercise,osteoporosis,stress,stress relief,Uncategorized — robertprice @ 5:48 pm

Trying to get into shape isn’t always the easiest thing to do. You have probably tried sports like football, hockey, soccer, and many others, but simply find you’re no good, or are constantly getting injured. You could always go out for a nice jog, or hit the gym. This might be entertaining for a short period of time, but soon the novelty wears off and you grow bored. You’ve tried everything else so why not try dance?

Dance provides a fun and entertaining way of becoming physically active, while at the same time, given you’ve stretched and warmed up properly, is a relatively safe way to get some exercise.

Some people will tell you “dance isn’t a sport!” These people clearly do not realize all the things dance does for your body. Depending on the type of dance and your body weight, you could be burning anywhere between 300-500 calories an hour. For those that do not know, a downhill skier that weighs 155lbs, burns 422 calories an hour for moderate effort. If dance isn’t a sport you might as well stop calling skiing, basketball, football, soccer, baseball, and swimming sports.

Dance has many, many benefits that include:

Flexibility– Most dancers stretch before participating in a routine, or practicing. Most dances require the dancer to be able to move many of their muscles in all different ways; this obviously leads to increased flexibility in just about every part of your body.

Bone Strength– As you are moving during a routine the bones in your legs are strengthened which helps slow down bone loss, combined with medication, you may be able to fight off Osteoporosis.

Balance– Dance requires an extreme amount of balance, so if you find yourself on the ground more than on your feet, dance will help improve your sense of balance.

Helps Relieve Stress– Dancing, especially with a partner or group can relieve a great deal of stress. Not only do you get to workout and express yourself, but you can socialize with those around you and have good time.

Dance promotes many health benefits and should seriously be considered by many people. It is a way to express yourself, relieve stress, and get some exercise, all while fighting off things like osteoporosis, and many other bone and muscle related pain. However, always know the limit at which you can push your body, the importance of dance is to have fun, so try not to pull a muscle.

Why Should I Take Multivitamins?

Watch Out!! – Some multivitamin formulas can contain “tag-along” ingredients picked up from the manufacturing plant that may not be the most favorable products to be taking regularly. Make sure to research and choose a reputable multivitamin like Centrum, VitaVim, Maltlevol (liquid), or One-A-Day (men’s or women’s), which were found to be free of extra ingredients. If you are pregnant, on prescription medicine, or just don’t know what vitamins are best for your body, seek advice from your healthcare professional.

A multivitamin is a supplement intended to improve your diet via providing you with the essential vitamins and minerals needed by the body to stay healthy. They are not only needed and used by those with dietary imbalances or specific dietary needs, but by those who are appreciative of their overall well-being… and also the rest of us, who neglect the importance of eating natural food that takes longer than 5 microwave-minutes to prepare.

It has been reported that those who take multivitamins daily noticed a positive change in their overall health. Specific vitamins and minerals allow us to benefit in different ways. A balanced daily intake of vitamins and minerals ensures overall stability for your body. In our highly demanding lifestyles, there are many things that hinder our ability to relax and cause stress. Although almost all vitamins have the uncanny ability to combat stress, vitamin B12 is proven to be the most effective in reducing stress. Vitamin B12 helps your body produce serotonin, (a feel-good chemical) that travels directly to the brain.

Multivitamins usually contain a number of fundamental vitamins such as vitamin A, C, D, E, K and B12. These vitamins are the basis of good health and if our body were to have a major deficiency of any of them, the effects would be quickly recognized. Some multivitamins also contain minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium, which all do their part in ensuring optimum physical and mental vitality. Taking a daily multivitamin is a small contribution to the body that anyone can benefit from.

People Should Avoid ‘Swine Flu Parties’

Many people across the United States have attempted to organize “Swine flu parties,” in which people gather in order to contract the virus. The belief behind self-infecting oneself is that if a person gets the virus now, which has in the United States appeared to be milder than the cases in neighbor country, Mexico, then you may become less likely to contract a more deadly second wave of the virus.

As some patients inquire about the notion of Swine Flu Parties, CanDrugStore recommends that people avoid them. Many health officials are saying that at this time attending “Swine flu parties” to purposely catch the virus is a “big mistake.” Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has gone on to say that, “[Swine Influenza] is a new, emerging infection, and we’re learning more about it each day,” he adds to this by saying that, “It’s a big mistake putting individuals and children at risk, and the CDC does not recommend that people follow that course.”

The idea for this originates from a combination of chickenpox parties and the belief that in 1918, people infected in the first wave of the influenza were less likely to become infected in the later waves; however, there is little evidence to support this.

Most health officials recommend following preventative measures that included, washing your hands, getting adequate sleep, eating a healthy diet, exercising, and avoiding sick people or those that may be sick.

However, if you are to develop symptoms, go see a doctor. If test results come back positive for the Swine flu, the CDC recommends Oseltamivir, known better by brand name Tamiflu. Many online pharmacies such as, CanDrugStore.com, sell Tamiflu, which has been high in demand since the outbreak of Swine Flu. Tamiflu is recommended for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses, and is safe in most people ages 1 and older.

For more information on how to protect yourself from the flu, take a look at ‘7 Ways to Prevent the Flu’ on YouTube.

Canada has some of the strictest pharmaceutical standards in the world. In addition to patients saving up to 70% with CIPA-certified international pharmacies, they can also feel confident knowing that they are receiving medications that are 100% safe.

5 Ways to Protect Yourself from the Flu

Filed under: cold,Flu,H1N1,Hand Sanitizer,Swine Flu,The flu,Uncategorized — robertprice @ 5:10 pm

With the outbreak of the H1N1 virus (Swine Flu), many people have grown increasingly worried about catching the virus, which has been confirmed in 279 people and resulting in 1 death. The virus has caused an incredulous spike in hand sanitizer sales. Businesses are running out of many brands of hand sanitizers and many producers of the product are trying to keep up with the demand.

With so many people relying on hand sanitizers, one has to ask why? Well, for starters they are portable and very convenient to use fitting in most bags and purses. They help prevent the spread of germs and bacteria that could lead to infections or illness, such as the flu. Furthermore, most hand sanitizers include certain ingredients that help to prevent skin dryness and irritation cause by the alcohol in the product.

However, some people still are not clear or are unaware of the limitations of hand sanitizers. Whenever you go to buy hand sanitizer always look at the concentration of alcohol to make sure it is somewhere between 60-95 percent. Any lower than 60 and the product will not be effective enough to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria. Hand sanitizers are not soap and water, they are meant to be used with soap and water or only if soap and water cannot be found. Dirt and any other kinds of grime are not washed away by hand sanitizer and need to be wiped away.

There are, however, other preventative measures you can take to avoid catching or transferring the flu.

1. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

2. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.

3. Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

4. If you get the flu, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Though hand sanitizers are a good idea to have with you and use regularly, try not to rely on them and always wash your hands with soap and water whenever you can.
