Top 5 Causes of Death in America and How to Prevent Them

  • Heart disease: 631,636

Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. However, there are ways to help prevent death from heart disease. Not smoking or using any tobacco products is the first and most obvious way of helping your heart out. Remember to get active. Exercise is a crucial part of keeping a healthy heart. Physical activity helps manage your weight and reduces the chance you will develop other conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Exercise also decrease stress levels, which is a cause of heart disease.

  • Cancer: 559,888

There are some ways to decrease your likelihood of developing cancer. Again, quitting smoking and not using tobacco products is one of the most crucial ways to cut cancer risks. Makes you really wonder if smoking is really worth it. Make sure to put on sunscreen when going outside to protect from UV rays. Also, remember to eat your fruits and vegetables and to go out and exercise.

  • Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 137,119

Surprise, surprise, quitting smoking is one of the top ways to prevent stroke. Further prevention suggestions are to moderate alcohol consumption, keep an eye on your blood pressure and get it checked at least once a year. Also eating a low fat and low salt diet is important. Remember to always exercise, it really helps in the prevention of a lot of different conditions, stroke included.

  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 124,583

To prevent lower respiratory diseases, quitting smoking is essential. The chemicals you inhale from cigarettes are very damaging to your lungs and the rest of your body. Furthermore, remember to eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise regularly.

  • Accidents (unintentional injuries): 121,599

The prevention of accidents isn’t as exact as preventing other diseases. To prevent accidents you must always be aware of what’s happening around you, and always be conscious of what you are doing.

The King of Pop, Michael Jackson Dies from a Cardiac Arrest. How to Notice the First Signs of Cardiac Arrest

Last week the world suffered a tragic blow, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson died at the age of 50. He was, and always will be one of the most influential figures in all of music. Whether or not you believed many of the rumors spread about him in the media, Michael Jackson was a great man who gave back to the world, and truly strived to make a difference. He donated his time, money, and efforts to at least 39 different charities. Sadly, while Jackson was preparing for a comeback tour, his incredible life would be brought to its untimely end by a cardiac arrest.

With the horrible news of Michael Jackson passing, I would like to make sure everyone knows what exactly a cardiac arrest is, and how to notice the warning signs. A cardiac arrest is described as the sudden, abrupt loss of heart function. Death can occur within minutes after symptoms appear, so every second counts. Furthermore, even if the victim is saved, he/she could receive permanent brain damage if left too long without treatment.

There are no available statistics for the number of cardiac arrests that occur each year. Although, it’s estimated that about 95% of victims die before reaching the hospital. However, when defibrillation is administered within 5 to 7 minutes, the survival rate of the victim is increased to about 30-45%.

Knowing how to spot a cardiac arrest is one of the most crucial steps to surviving it. During a cardiac arrest the victim loses consciousness, stops normal breathing and loses pulse and blood pressure. If you spot any of these, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1. Those few seconds may be the difference between life and death.

The American Heart Association recommends these three steps in the event of a cardiac arrest.

  • Know the warning signs of cardiac arrest. During cardiac arrest a victim loses consciousness, stops normal breathing and loses pulse and blood pressure.
  • Call 9-1-1 immediately to access the emergency medical system if you see any cardiac arrest warning signs.
  • Give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to help keep the cardiac arrest victim alive until emergency help arrives. CPR keeps blood and oxygen flowing to the heart and brain until defibrillation can be administered.

Rest in peace Michael, you’ve earned it.

Obese Women are the Most Likely to Become Pregnant

According to Reuters Health Information, a study posted in Diabetes Care has shown that contraceptive use among obese women in North America is only 33% for obese women (BMI 30+). Contraceptive use by this high-risk group is less than the contraceptive use by women without or obesity.

One possible reason for a low contraceptive use amongst obese women is the risks that are associated with birth control use for these groups. Contraceptive shots have been proven to be less effective on obese women due to thicker layers of fat tissue, and a recent study has found that Obese and overweight women have a 70% higher chance of becoming pregnant than women of normal BMI while using oral contraceptives.

A study says that 5 out of 100 overweight women became pregnant in one year while using oral contraceptives containing estrogen and progestin, and only 3 out of 100 women of normal weight became pregnant in one year. The supposed reason for these statistics is that the hormones in birth control pills are soluble in fat; therefore, the majority of the hormones taken by obese women will dissolve before entering the blood stream. In addition, blood clotting in obese women is more common than in women of normal weight, and taking birth control pills could increase risk.

Due to a decrease in efficiency of birth control pills and shots in obese women, many obese women do not use these common forms of contraceptive, and are therefore more likely to become pregnant.

New Video Game Helps Lazy Eye Syndrome

As time goes on, studies keep showing the benefits of video games. Tel Aviv University’s eye and brain specialist Dr. Uri Polat of the Goldschleger Eye Research Institute has recently developed a video game that helps treat Amblyopia. For those that don’t know, amblyopia is more commonly known as lazy eye syndrome.

Roughly four percent of children suffer from lazy eye syndrome. The treatment most commonly used was an eye patch which is applied, sometimes for months at a time in attempts to fix the lazy eye. However, this treatment is not always effective, and wearing an eye patch for months may also significantly harm the child’s self-esteem.

However, the video game developed by Dr. Polat, is designed to correct the activity of the neutrons in the brain. Other specialists who have looked at Dr. Polat’s game say that about 20 hours of playing the video game is worth about 500 hours of wearing the patch. Not only is the video game much more effective, but the harm done to the child’s self-esteem and social life are minimal, if they are even existent.

Furthermore, the video game attempts to correct lazy eye syndrome in adults, which many doctors had previously given up on. Previously, if the problem wasn’t corrected by the age of nine, many doctors believe that the problem may never be corrected. Obviously the development of a treatment that may work in adults is monumental. Not only would the game improve the quality of life for many adults and children, but it would also allow many adults to live safer lives by restoring vision of both eyes.

So, once again it seems that video games have come to the rescue. Maybe someday soon people will realize that video games are not a bad thing. They just need to be monitored by parents. Make sure your children don’t play for too long, but let them play.

5 Reasons Why an Apple a Day Will Keep Many Doctors Away

Almost everyone has heard of the expression, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” However, if you are anything like me, you must have wondered why an apple keeps the doctor away. Well I intend to give you a few reasons why an apple a day won’t just keep one doctor away, but many.

1. Prevents many types of cancer. Apples help prevent cancer of the lung, breast, colon, and liver. A study of 10,000 people showed that those who ate the most apples cut their risk of lung cancer in half. Cornell University conducted a study using rats. Those that ate 1 apple a day reduced the risk of breast cancer by 17%, while those that had 3 reduced their risk by 39%, and those that ate 6 apples per day further cut their risk of breast cancer by 44%. A study showed that rats that were fed an extract from apples skins had a 43% lower risk of colon cancer, the second leading cause of death from cancer. Additionally, the rats that were fed extract from apple skins had a 57% lower risk of liver cancer.

2. Bone Protection. Researchers from France discovered that phloridzin, a flavanoid found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may increase bone density. Boron, also found in apples helps strengthen bones as well.

3. Helps manage diabetes. Pectin, which is found in apples, gives galacturonic acid to the body. This lowers the body’s need for insulin and in turn, this may be able to aid in the management of diabetes.

4. Helps protect against Alzheimer’s. A study conducted on rats at Cornell University found that a potent antioxidant found abundantly in apples appears to protect the brain cells against oxidative stress. This oxidative stress is a tissue-damaging process that is linked to Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disorders.

5. Lowers cholesterol. The pectin found in apples lowers LDL, or the “bad” cholesterol. Eating two apples a day may actually lower cholesterol by 16%! Additionally, apples may reduce skin disease.

60% of Bankruptcies Are Caused By Medical Bills

Filed under: bankrupt,bankruptcy,medical debt,medicine,obama,Uncategorized — robertprice @ 5:43 pm

Getting help is not as easy as it used to be. A recent study showed that roughly 60% of all bankruptcies in America are due to medical bills. This is an increase of 50% in just six years. And what’s worse is that for the middle class, medical insurance offers little protection, if any at all.

The study found that 75% of the bankrupt families actually had medical insurance. However, the medical debts were too costly. The research team, consisting of Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School, and Ohio University, reported that, “Using a conservative definition, 62.1 percent of all bankruptcies in 2007 were medical; 92 percent of these medical debtors had medical debts over $5,000, or 10 percent of pretax family income. Most medical debtors were well-educated, owned homes and had middle-class occupations.”

The study surveyed 2,134 random families that filed for bankruptcy between January and April, 2007, BEFORE the recession began. Only 29% of the families blamed their bankruptcy on the medical bills, 62% had medical bills that were equivalent or greater than 10% of the family income.

Obviously something needs to be done here. Many middle class Americans are being thrown into bankruptcy when they are most in need of help. The United States Government, headed by President Obama, is beginning its reform of the current healthcare system. While it will obviously take some tweaking before the new system will be perfected it is needed. Currently, the U.S healthcare system leaves 15% of the American population (about 46 million people if you didn’t know), without healthcare insurance. 46 million people without any coverage whatsoever.

What is more appalling is that the costs of the medical bills for nonstroke neurological illnesses, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) are as high as $34,167. MS is followed by diabetes ($26,971), injuries ($25,096), stroke ($23,380), mental illnesses ($23,178), and heart disease ($21,955).

It is clear that something needs to be done, and President Obama also recognizes that some sort of change will be needed. The immense job of reforming the current healthcare system is in his hands, and hopefully he is up to the task. He promised change, but let’s see if he can change things for the better.

Are Jon and Kate Causing Harm to Their Children in Exchange for Fame?

Filed under: Uncategorized — robertprice @ 5:38 pm

Jon & Kate Plus 8,” which follows the lives of Jon, Kate and their eight children (twin girls, and sextuplets). The show has been a hit with the American audience, pulling millions of viewers to watch the show every episode, but is there a potential danger to the children?

(Picture from www.examiner.com)

“I don’t really care whether Jon has been faithful to Kate or not. My question about him and his wife is about how they can justify turning their kids’ lives into entertainment, with unknown, possibly severe, psychological fallout.

No one knows the precise psychological impact of having parents who are “acting” like parents for the cameras or having producers around who are hoping for high drama, but the impact could be significant and negative… How does one of the children decide to drop out of the series? If he or she did, would that child risk losing parental attention and love? Who has the moral right to decide that another human being’s life story will be played for television audiences?” –Excerpt from Fox News Health Blog

I myself have always wondered if Jon and Kate ever really considered what they could be doing to their children, what kind of horrible psychological trauma they are causing to the kids. There are many child stars that have experienced many problems because of their early fame. Jack Osbourne, son of rocker Ozzy Osbourne, was part of the hit reality show based around his family, appropriately name “The Osbournes.” The show won an Emmy in 2002 and opened many doors for Jack, but not all of them were good. Jack Osbourne began partying and became addicted to many drugs. He even attempted to kill himself using alcohol and drugs, followed by cutting his hands with shards of glass.

Obviously, Jon and Kate should perhaps re-assess their decision and put their children’s health before their own fame.
