The Health Benefits of Vitamin A

When your parents told you to eat your carrots because they would improve your eyesight, they weren’t kidding. The beta-carotene in carrots is converted by your body into vitamin A, an essential nutrient for not only healthy eyesight, but also several other conditions as well.

The Health Benefits of Vitamin A

  • Maintains Healthy Eyesight – Vitamin A, as you probably already know, is a key nutrient in maintaining healthy eyesight. Also called retinol, vitamin A aids eyes in adjusting to different lighting and additionally keeps them moist.
  • Prevents and Combats Cancer – Vitamin A keeps cells and cell membranes moist and healthy, making them more resistant to cancers. It has also been proven to reduce the reproduction of DNA of cancerous cells by slowing the growth of tumors and prevent leukemia cells from dividing into new cells.
  • Strong Bones – Both bones and teeth can greatly benefit from the intake of vitamin A, as it helps bones to grow in children and teenagers. Vitamin A continues to support the formation of strong bones in adults as well.
  • Clear Skin – Vitamin A is a crucial ingredient in acne medications including Tretinoin and Isotretinoin, which treat mild to severe forms of acne.

Although vitamin A is an important nutrient, it should only be incorporated into your diet in moderate amounts. Overdosing vitamin A can lead to nausea, irritability and blurred vision and additionally will turn palms and feet orange. The most severe cases of vitamin A overdose may also lead to birth defects.

Vitamin A, in its raw form, can be found in a variety of foods, including beef liver, egg yolk cheddar cheese and fortified milk. Carotene, which is easily converted to vitamin A can be found in certain foods like sweet potato, carrots, pumpkin, cantaloupe, broccoli, apricots, spinach and collard greens.

5 Ways to Deal with Anger

Recently, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to anger problems and ways to manage anger. I, personally don’t have an anger problem (at least I don’t think I do), but one of my friends, who will remain nameless (KJ), might have a tiny anger problem. Let’s just say he punched a hole through his door after the Indianapolis Colts lost the Super bowl (that was the second door he broke in the span of two weeks). Needless to say, he may have to find some way to vent this anger.

1. Think Before You Act – As soon as you notice your anger building, try to really think about why you’re angry. Sometimes we (yes even me) become angered over simple things. By taking an extra few seconds to assess the situation, you may be able to calm yourself.

2. Recognize Your Anger – Before you can even begin to deal with your anger, you need to be able to realize when you are beginning to become angry.

3. Distract Yourself – By taking your mind off of something, you can find peace. I’ve seen many people use many different techniques to distract their minds from their anger. This could be simply squeezing a stress ball or putting a rubber band on your wrist, so you can snap the band to focus your mind on the minor and brief pain on your wrist.

4. Vent – For some people, preventing anger just doesn’t appear to be possible and they have to release their aggression. If this is you, try to USE your aggression in a beneficial or safe environment. I have a punching bag at home that I beat up every time I’m angry. I get some exercise in, release all the built up rage, and I’m too tired to even think about being angry by the end. Playing a sport is an excellent form of anger management.

5. Don’t Sleep On It – I tried to go to bed angry for many years thinking it would be better in the morning, but this just led to me being even angrier. I find that if you’re angry, it’s better to deal with it quickly instead of sleeping on it. If it’s late, try writing down what made you angry and why. You’ll probably end up writing more than you first intended and will most likely go completely off topic, but you’ll essentially clear your mind or at least forget about your anger.

Sit Up and Listen: Poor Posture

Filed under: back pain,bad posture,good posture,Health,posture,slouching,Uncategorized — robertprice @ 4:55 pm

Poor posture can be caused by a number of factors; everything from the shoes we wear on a daily basis to the way we sit while eating dinner make significant contributions to our posture. Good posture is defined as the most effective positioning of our bodies to withstand the force of gravity. Poor posture develops as a result of various factors, some associated with the structure of the body, often generated by a misalignment of the bones in the feet, and additionally factors of our environment. Because poor posture can negatively affect our health, requiring medication or prescription drugs for muscular stress and back pain, taking steps to improve posture will return many health benefits in the long term.

Determining whether your bad posture is caused by environmental factors or structural factors is the first step in correcting bad posture. Speaking to a shoe specialist (at your local running store) or your physician may help to rule out the underlying causes of your posture issues. Many specialists recommend the Alexander Technique, a program where a teacher observes and corrects your posture while you carry out a series of tasks, as the most viable posture correction program, however yoga and other exercise programs have been proven to improve posture as well.

Improving poor posture is extremely important, as it can lead to chronic muscle pain, as well as stress on the nervous, digestive and circulatory systems. Although correcting poor posture habits can be difficult, by becoming aware of our bodies’ natural position and taking initiative to improve it, your bad posture can become a thing of the past.

Soft Drinks Significantly Increase Risk of Developing Pancreatic Cancer

Soft drinks are already one of the biggest, or even possibly the biggest, drinks to avoid if you want to be healthy. However, most of the time, we talk about soft drinks as a major factor to weight gain. Recently, a study has discovered a link between soft drinks and pancreatic cancer.

The pancreas creates insulin, while scientists believe that high levels of insulin can increase the growth of cancerous cells. When we take in too much sugar, we drastically increase our insulin levels. Soft drinks are currently one of the main sources of sugar in the diet of most Americans.

The results of the study were astonishing. Those that drank two or more cups of pop every week had an 87 percent increase in the risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Many things like smoking, obesity, diabetes, and red meat intake were just a few of the factors taken into consideration.

Soft drinks just keep getting even worse for your body every time we learn something new. Cutting down on your pop consumption definitely couldn’t hurt. You’ll help lessen your chances of developing pancreatic cancer and you will become healthier in general. You might even be able to lose those few extra pounds.

Foods That Can Decrease Inflammation and Boost Your Immune System

Inflammation

Inflammation can become a very bothersome and painful thing to deal with. Some people will just wait for the inflammation to decrease naturally, while others have serious medical problems that cause frequent inflammation that is often very painful. Either way, most people do not enjoy this inflammation, but are unaware that there are natural and fairly simple ways to help decrease symptoms. However, I would just like to say that in some serious cases, only medication will be helpful. Consult with your doctor about the severity of your condition.

In order to fight inflammation you should try eating foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. These acids help your body produce hormones to lessen your inflammation. Some of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids are in coldwater fish, such as wild salmon, sardines, trout and mackerel. There are also some plants that are reasonably good sources of omega-3. If you’re not the fish-eating type (my dad and sister) try having some walnuts, flaxseed or canola oil.

Immune System

Obviously being sick isn’t something many of us strive for. That’s why a healthy immune system is so important. Our immune system help protect us against illness by destroying things like harmful bacteria and viruses. However, we have to take care of our immune system if we want it to take care of us.

There are many foods that can help us boost our immune system. Garlic is one of the best. For a very long time (think ancient Egypt) garlic has been revered for its healthy benefits. Green tea is also a great, simple thing to add to a meal, like dinner, to help protect against all those things looking to make you sick. Green tea has also been linked to cancer-prevention. Additionally, broccoli is an extremely good immune booster. Containing vitamins A, C, E, anti-cancer agents, and strong antioxidants, there aren’t many things that are more effective at boosting your immune system than broccoli.

Are Organics Really Healthier?

Filed under: health diet,organic,organic foods,pesticides,Uncategorized — robertprice @ 5:12 pm

Organic foods are foods that are grown without synthetic additives or chemicals. It like eating food from 50 years ago, before sprays and chemicals were used in farming. Organic meat means the animals are fed with natural foods and aren’t medicated with growth hormones or other advancements.

Tests showed that 65 per cent of the regular fruit had pesticide residue, while only 17 per cent of organic fruit showed pesticide remains. In vegetables, 67 per cent showed remains of pesticides, while only 16 per cent of organic fruits did. These results included imported fruits.

Not all organic foods will prove pesticide free. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says that “there is no guarantee the product will be free from pesticides or free from residues and free from other things that are not permitted.”

A study showed that kids put on an organic diet showed no pesticides in their test samples after 7 days, when before they were consuming between 3 and 10 pesticide residues per day.

Organic foods cost more. Regular green peppers cost 1.49 dollars per pound today, whereas organic green peppers cost 1.99 dollars per pound today. Organic meat and dairy products cost a lot more than the regular options.

Organic foods have higher levels (approximately 27 percent higher) of vitamin C and magnesium than non-organics. As well, in organic livestock have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid.

Organic food is grown in lovely fertile soil. The reason it is so lovely, is because the most soil is fertilized with manure. Manure contains E Coli which may be fatal. 3 people in the US were killed in 2006 due to organic spinach polluted with E Coli.

Although organic foods may have great health benefits, they may still be unsafe. Plainly ask your organic dealer if their organic foods were grown in manure to be safe.

Drop Fat, Get Muscle

By now, countless people’s New Year’s resolutions have fallen through; one in particular is to lose weight. Not only is it complex to lose weight, but to gain muscle at the same time seems impossible. Fortunately there are certain tips in dieting and exercise which may be helpful in completing this.

1. Weight loss occurs when your body has fewer calories. This can occur with dieting and/or exercise. Weight training not only burns calories, but also puts your muscles to work, building and strengthening them. Once you have increased your muscle, you will also burn more calories. Muscle burns calories, thus helping in weight loss. Calorie maintenance level is the number of calories your body naturally burns each day; muscle increases this number substantially. Weight training includes squats, dead lifts, bench presses, bicep curls, hammer curls, tricep extensions, exc. Other exercises which would be helpful are squats lunges, crunches, push-ups and back extensions.

2. Eat the right foods if you want to lose weight. You cannot expect your body to discard fat when you are still maintaining a high calorie intake, even if you do weight exercises. Foods you should eat when trying to gain muscle include the following:

a. Protein: Lots and lots of protein! Eat meat, poultry, fish, eggs, peanut butter, etc.

b. Fat: As bad as this sounds, fat is essential for muscle gain. Just exercise lots and the bad fat will be gone. Fish oil and omega 3, 6, and 9 are great for muscle gain.

c. Vegetables and fruits: Colorful vegetables are the best. The more colorful the plate, the healthier it is. Fruits have healthy sugar in them. This is a better form of sugar than what you could get from most other foods.

d. Water: Drink and drink and drink water. It is essential for everything.

e. Whole grains: Trade your white bread or rice for whole grain if you want to lose weight and gain muscle.

Other tips are:

– Avoid foods that come out of a box.

– Avoid trans-fats, but saturated fats are fine.

– Don’t drink pop.

– Limit not-natural sugar consumption.

Other options such as protein powder and prescription and non prescription drugs can help you to reach your goal as you lose weight, and gain muscle.

5 Helpful Tips to Prevent Heartburn

Filed under: acid reflux, alli,GERD,heartburn, nexium,Uncategorized, weight loss — robertprice @ 3:47 pm

Heartburn can be very uncomfortable and very distressing for most people. I get it from time to time and at first I wasn’t sure what I could do to stop the heartburn from occurring. I began to get it frequently, to the point where I was thinking about seeing the doctor in case it was serious. Luckily I found some advice that gave me the ability to prevent my heartburn. I’d like to pass some of that advice on.

Be aware of what you eat – Certain foods can cause heartburn in people. Always be aware of what you eat. If you begin to notice a frequent occurrence of heartburn, take a log of everything you eat for a few days and note when you had signs of heartburn. Eliminate foods you think might be causing your heartburn until your symptoms improve. The internet can provide lists of foods that may cause heartburn.

Chew your food don’t inhale it – My father would always ask me and my sister if we ate our food or inhaled it, if we finished our food in a hurry. What I didn’t know at the time was that eating your food quickly can lead to heartburn. Make sure you take your time eating your meal, not only does it help prevent heartburn, but it also is a known weight loss tip.

Gravity – You have the power to make gravity work for or against you. By standing or sitting up, you use gravity to keep the stomach acid in your stomach. However, by lying down, especially after eating, you are more likely to experience heartburn.

Get rid of the spare tireLose weight. It may be a harsh realization, but if you know you’ve let yourself go a bit, try losing some weight. Many people that lose some weight experience instant relief.

Ask a doctor – If you’ve tried everything you can think of, go see your doctor. He or she may provide you with a new idea, or you may have acid reflux which may require you to take medications. Either way it’s better to be safe than sorry.
