Why Buying Drugs From Canada Is The Only Way To Go For Many American Consumers

cheerful smiling pharmacist chemist man standing in pharmacy dru

Even with available medication in the United States, millions of Americans continue to purchase their prescription medications in Canada. To understand the reason behind this phenomenon and its repercussions, the Canadian International Pharmacy Association recently rolled out a survey to approximately 2,700 American customers, and what they found was very surprising.

Among the respondents, 64% have reported purchasing prescription medication from Canadian pharmacies, with the reason that it is cheaper to purchase from there than within the country. Another 22% of the respondents reported that their medications are not covered by their medical insurance.

Numerous studies have documented the problem that millions of Americans face due to expensive medication, and this is further validated by the survey. Twenty-five percent of the respondents agree with this issue, recognizing the fact that lack of financial capacity has kept them or someone in their household from filling their required prescriptions. Around 30% of respondents have reported having to resort to splitting pills or skipping doses or other similar actions because of the lack of medication available.

Because of this, quite a number of people in this predicament have resorted to buying medication outside the country – because they are more affordable and therefore accessible.

In the survey, respondents report to saving up to 50% a month by purchasing their medication from Canadian pharmacies. Most purchases are done online, with medicine shipped inside the United States. Some, however, access medication by taking trips across the border. Unfortunately, not everyone has the same access to Canadian pharmacies.

Given that, taking out the option of buying medication from Canada can pose serious problems to many of the country’s sick individuals. Without this option, only 32% of the respondents would be able to fill some of their prescriptions. Eleven percent would not be able to buy medicine at all.

This eventually leads to the problem of non-adherence, which gives rise to more health problems in patients. Non-adherence is another real problem which causes the health care system an additional $290 billion each year – an unnecessary expenditure that burdens the country’s taxpayers.

Indeed, the problem of expensive medication in the United States is something that needs addressing, and until such time, patients will continue to purchase from Canadian pharmacies to address their medication needs.

How to notice cancer symptoms—better safe than sorry

Cancer

Considering the danger level associated with cancer today, you’d probably expect people to take cancer-related symptoms more serious than ever before. But data taken from the field is suggesting otherwise. A study conducted by Dr. Katrina Whitaker showed that of the 53% of people who demonstrated warning signs for cancer, only about 2% of them actually considered them to be serious.

The study took place in the UK, in which 1,724 people over the age of 50 were asked a variety of health questions. The questionnaire was strategically designed to figure out if patients were experiencing any one of the 17 symptoms on it (10 of which were considered very serious cancer related symptoms). Some of these included change in bowel habits, changes in mole appearance, or unexplained coughs. Others like unexplained weight loss or lumps were also included, among others.

The important thing is that the people were not told which of the symptoms were considered warning signs for cancer. This helped add more credibility and accuracy to the study.

The Results

Unfortunately, only about 2% of the participants considered their symptoms to be related to cancer. Surprisingly, the study also revealed that a whopping 53% of participants reported having experienced at least one of these warnings signs within the previous three months. Why is this information important? Well, if you’re over the age of 50 (when cancer is most likely to occur), you need to start taking these warning signs seriously to help prevent the disease from spreading to a pathological level.

During the study, the most common warning sign for cancer was persistent coughing. The other equally common warning sign was consistent changes in bowel habits. Two others, problems swallowing and unexplained weight loss, were the least reported symptoms on the study. Even obvious warning signs, like changes in mole appearance or unexplained lumps, were not considered “dangerous” to the participants. It’s actually pretty frightening to think that these individuals didn’t even consider cancer being a potential cause of these symptoms.

It’s Better To Be Safe Than Sorry

Just because you’ve experienced a warning sign for cancer, doesn’t mean that you actually have the disease. However, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. If you’re experiencing any of these warning signs, it’s a good idea to visit a primary care physician to see what the problem is, especially if these symptoms remain consistent for an extended period of time. It might just save your life.

75% Increase In Drug Prices

The disturbing news story by Bloomberg on a potential increase in drug prices has been the subject of discussion for quite a while. The article claimed that some drugs are bound to experience an increase in prices of up to 75% in the next seven years while some might even experience a greater increase.

The question we are asking is,” What methods do the pharmaceutical companies employ in substantiating these costs? ” Obviously, the reason can’t be lack of profits. This means that it is a matter of knowing they are able to do it without anyone stopping them. It all comes down to the amount of leverage one can employ in order to gain monopoly. Various possibilities come to mind when you think about their reasons for doing it. It makes you wonder if they could be relying on members of congress therefore making them incur millions in lobbying (but again, that can’t be because they were just #9) and so they are counting on a major trade pact (TPP) to give them monopoly in the industry.

Studies reveal that 35 million Americans are unable to stick to their prescription regimen due to lack of finances to cover the cost. This has resulted into millions of people resorting to measures such as cutting back on the recommended dosage, splitting pills or simply failing to take their health maintenance medications. It goes without saying that this situation is bound to get worse if the 75% increase in the cost of drugs is carried out.

A survey carried out by the Commonwealth Fund Biennial Health Insurance reported a decline in the percentage of working-age adults who are uninsured. This was due to some policies put in place by the Affordable Care Act and these were in form of consumer protections and subsidized insurance options. The figure dropped from 37 million people equivalent to 20% of the population to 29 million which is equivalent to 16% of the population. This was between 2010 and the second half of 2014.

These policies and others have led to a significant decline in the number of U.S adults who lack or have inadequate health insurance. In addition to that, the survey discovered that working-age adults are able to access the health care they need and at affordable costs therefore reducing the financial burden normally brought about by medical bills and debts. All these efforts have resulted into great progress in the health care sector of the U.S. This is all set to change when the prices of medications go up by a whole 75% and it will make the situation worse than before. Many people will not be able to affect medical care. The fact that improvements in medical bill problems have been reported by insured adults doesn’t mean that these problems have completely vanished. The truth is that they are still on a high level especially among working-age adults with low incomes. Therefore, it is obvious that we will be taking many steps backwards in the health care sector when the prices changes are put in place.

Animal Assisted Therapy Helps Improve Human Lives

Filed under: animal shelter,animal therapy,dementia,drug treatments — Tags: , , — robertprice @ 9:25 pm

P

If you’re an animal lover then it shouldn’t come to you as a surprise that having a pet can help alleviate stress, bring good fortune, and cope with problems. As of 2012, it was estimated that about 62% of American households owned at least one pet. Thanks to the strong bond that humans have with animals, something called “Animal-Assisted Therapy” (or AAT) has been developed, which is basically based around the idea that animals can help humans who are coping with certain medical conditions.

What is AAT?

AAT is basically an intervention that harnesses the power of animal interaction to help aid in the recovery of healthy problems that people are experiencing. This therapy is believed to provide a huge amount of benefits, including improved mental health, increased social skills, and better self-esteem. Patients who are experiencing cancer, autism, heart failure, and even schizophrenia are a few of the many individuals benefiting from this therapy.

How does AAT Work?

AAT involves caring for animals on a regular basis, and in return, that individual will be able to experience a sense of love and connection with their pet. Individuals might be required to groom, bathe, or feed the animals as well depending on the severity of their medical condition. The exposure to these animals might result in a higher level of engagement as well as a smaller amount of problematic behaviors. Overall, it may also make someone with an illness easier to care for by medical personnel.

AAT Works Wonders for Individuals with Dementia

Another key benefit to AAT is that it works wonders for individuals who are experiencing Alzheimer’s. It isn’t uncommon for people with dementia to have their world shrink down considerably, until they’re unable to adhere to even the most basic of human needs. But having a strong relationship with a pet can provide the affected individual with something to think about and look forward to.

Another form of AAT could include bringing an animal to a care facility so that it can interact with a patient. There are organizations, like Pet Partners for example, who already provide these services. Activities that are animal-assisted can help provide education and motivation required to increase the quality of someone’s life.

Should There Be More Focus on AAT?

One of the best things about AAT is that it is easily implementable. And due to the high amount of benefits that it provides, there is likely to be more research conducted on other kinds of benefits that it provides. Hard data is required to convince insurance companies that ATT can be just as effective as other medical interventions. But researchers believe that this is going to take time to fully pan out.

Could AAT Ever Replace Drug Treatment?

Can or should AAT replace drug treatments or reduce one’s need for them? Well, this is debatable. However, most people who own pets can agree that owning one can feel like having an effective drug with no side effects – at least this is what researchers propose.
