Can Prescription Medication be Used to Treat Leukemia?

Searching for a drug to treat a medical Medical equipment stethoscope, pen and medication over documentscondition has always been a very standardized procedure. It involves looking for a set of symptoms that indicate a condition and a finding an appropriate drug to treat the condition. However, some conditions are very specific to a patient. This has been the premise of a recent branch of drugs called precision medicine.

Precision medicines are drugs that cure certain conditions and are specific for each and every case. The main idea revolving the concept of precision drugs is finding appropriate medicines that precisely cure a patient’s unique condition.

For instance, “doctors know a drug called Gleevec (Imatinib) works well in treating leukemia only when the cancer cells have one particular genetic makeup. So, rather than treat everyone with leukemia using Gleevec, doctors test people for that specific genetic mix and give the drug only to those who have it.” [1]

7 Ways to Prevent Tylenol Overdose in Children

DD-05142016-0O1A6416Acetaminophen is contained in over 100 medications that are sold over the counter.  It is commonly purchased under the brand name Tylenol, but it can be found in common over-the-counter medication for pain, cough and fever.

An acetaminophen overdose usually occurs when adults usually take more than the recommended dose or unintentionally take acetaminophen in different forms.  This usually occurs when patients do not realize that there is acetaminophen in other medications and taking them together in a short period of time can result in an overdose.

Children can be victims of acetaminophen overdoses, usually because of their caretakers. Giving a child too much acetaminophen or forgetting the dose they have already taken can be a cause. It is common that children overdose when they mistake acetaminophen for candy, or drink large amounts of syrup all at once. Here are some ways an overdose can be prevented:

  • Keep all of your medicines in locked cabinets or out of reach of children.
  • Keep a track or log of the doses and medications you give your child. Make sure you share this information with your children’s caregivers.
  • Read all labels of your children’s medications and monitor which medications have acetaminophen in them. Ensure that the doses in each are safe to take at the same time.
  • Use your child’s weight to determine the dose of acetaminophen and make sure that the formula is meant for the same age group.
  • Consult a pharmacist to determine if the form of OTC acetaminophen you are giving your child is appropriate.
  • Measure a child’s dose of acetaminophen with a dropper when given in liquid form.
  • Avoid giving your child or taking the medication yourself if you have chronic pain and it is not going away with a simple OTC medication. Consult a doctor on which medication is more appropriate to take to get better results

Implementing these prevention methods can make a significant impact towards preventing an overdose in children.  Make sure to educate your child about the dangers of drugs that seem harmless.

How to notice cancer symptoms—better safe than sorry

Cancer

Considering the danger level associated with cancer today, you’d probably expect people to take cancer-related symptoms more serious than ever before. But data taken from the field is suggesting otherwise. A study conducted by Dr. Katrina Whitaker showed that of the 53% of people who demonstrated warning signs for cancer, only about 2% of them actually considered them to be serious.

The study took place in the UK, in which 1,724 people over the age of 50 were asked a variety of health questions. The questionnaire was strategically designed to figure out if patients were experiencing any one of the 17 symptoms on it (10 of which were considered very serious cancer related symptoms). Some of these included change in bowel habits, changes in mole appearance, or unexplained coughs. Others like unexplained weight loss or lumps were also included, among others.

The important thing is that the people were not told which of the symptoms were considered warning signs for cancer. This helped add more credibility and accuracy to the study.

The Results

Unfortunately, only about 2% of the participants considered their symptoms to be related to cancer. Surprisingly, the study also revealed that a whopping 53% of participants reported having experienced at least one of these warnings signs within the previous three months. Why is this information important? Well, if you’re over the age of 50 (when cancer is most likely to occur), you need to start taking these warning signs seriously to help prevent the disease from spreading to a pathological level.

During the study, the most common warning sign for cancer was persistent coughing. The other equally common warning sign was consistent changes in bowel habits. Two others, problems swallowing and unexplained weight loss, were the least reported symptoms on the study. Even obvious warning signs, like changes in mole appearance or unexplained lumps, were not considered “dangerous” to the participants. It’s actually pretty frightening to think that these individuals didn’t even consider cancer being a potential cause of these symptoms.

It’s Better To Be Safe Than Sorry

Just because you’ve experienced a warning sign for cancer, doesn’t mean that you actually have the disease. However, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. If you’re experiencing any of these warning signs, it’s a good idea to visit a primary care physician to see what the problem is, especially if these symptoms remain consistent for an extended period of time. It might just save your life.

Cancer Causing Food Dyes

Artificial food dyes provide no nutritional value in our foods, but they are used extensively to make many items more appealing to the eye. However, would you still want to purchase something that could cause cancer? I thought not.

Three of the most commonly used food dyes, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Red 40, are known to be contaminated with carcinogens. However, even though these food dyes are known to cause cancer, does not mean manufacturers will have to stop using them. Red 3 has been known to cause cancer for some time now, even the FDA acknowledges this fact. However, the Reagan administration stopped a ban from being placed on the food dye.

It seems more is being done in Europe to at least warn the public about these harmful food additives. The European food manufacturers are now being required to place warnings on the packaging of products using these food dyes. The six food dyes, identified in 2008 by Britain’s Southampton University, and now known as the Southampton Six are: tartrazine (E102), quinoline yellow (E104), sunset yellow (E110), carmoisine (E122), ponceau (E124), and allura red (E129).

5 Foods That Increase Your Risk of Cancer

In today’s world, cancer is likely to affect you in some way. Whether this means your mother has cancer, you wife or husband has cancer, your child has cancer, or even you have cancer, it doesn’t matter as you will likely have to face this battle one way or another. Every year, many people are diagnosed with some type of cancer. There are those that respond well to treatment, but others may not be so fortunate. There have been breakthroughs that have helped treat cancer, but there is still no cure for cancer. Until there is a cure, all we can do is try to prevent the development of cancer. Here is a list of some of the top foods that increase your risk of cancer.

  1. Sugar. White or brown sugar doesn’t matter as both can increase your risk of developing cancer.
  2. Foods that are smoked, pickled, or heavily salted can lead to an increased risk of stomach cancer.
  3. Pop/Soda and drinking an excessive amount of alcohol may lead to a higher risk of cancer. Drinks like Coca Cola and Pepsi are horrible for your health for a number of reasons. They contain an excess of sugar and provide little, if any, nutritional value.
  4. Any burned or charred foods. These foods create carcinogens which can lead to cancer.
  5. Snack foods that contain Trans fats. These may include foods like French fries and chips.

            Getting Rid of the Clown

For years, Ronald McDonald has been the face of the McDonald’s fast food chain. Recently though, there has been a very serious push to send Ronald into retirement. With the current obesity problem, especially among young children, many people believe it’s time for Ronald to go.

Personally, I’m no big fan of Ronald McDonald, but I also don’t believe he is entirely to blame here. Yes, McDonald’s isn’t the healthiest food for anyone to eat, but that doesn’t mean you should blame the company for your weight problems, or the weight problems your children are now facing. You have to make the decision about your life. If you choose to eat unhealthy all the time, you must be willing to accept the consequences of your actions.

As for those parents placing total blame on the curly haired clown, maybe you should ask who bought the food for your child, who continually gave unhealthy food to your child? Parents need to realize they are responsible for their children as well as themselves. Small children don’t know that eating McDonald’s every day isn’t healthy. We as adults need to explain this to them and control what kinds of food they are eating.

Sure McDonald’s isn’t healthy food, but sitting outside tanning in the sun isn’t either. Pretty soon we’ll be suing the sun for giving us skin cancer. We need to start accepting that maybe something’s are our fault and that we should take some actual responsibility, that’s part of growing up that most of us haven’t been able to understand.

Soft Drinks Significantly Increase Risk of Developing Pancreatic Cancer

Soft drinks are already one of the biggest, or even possibly the biggest, drinks to avoid if you want to be healthy. However, most of the time, we talk about soft drinks as a major factor to weight gain. Recently, a study has discovered a link between soft drinks and pancreatic cancer.

The pancreas creates insulin, while scientists believe that high levels of insulin can increase the growth of cancerous cells. When we take in too much sugar, we drastically increase our insulin levels. Soft drinks are currently one of the main sources of sugar in the diet of most Americans.

The results of the study were astonishing. Those that drank two or more cups of pop every week had an 87 percent increase in the risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Many things like smoking, obesity, diabetes, and red meat intake were just a few of the factors taken into consideration.

Soft drinks just keep getting even worse for your body every time we learn something new. Cutting down on your pop consumption definitely couldn’t hurt. You’ll help lessen your chances of developing pancreatic cancer and you will become healthier in general. You might even be able to lose those few extra pounds.

Foods That Can Decrease Inflammation and Boost Your Immune System

            Inflammation

Inflammation can become a very bothersome and painful thing to deal with. Some people will just wait for the inflammation to decrease naturally, while others have serious medical problems that cause frequent inflammation that is often very painful. Either way, most people do not enjoy this inflammation, but are unaware that there are natural and fairly simple ways to help decrease symptoms. However, I would just like to say that in some serious cases, only medication will be helpful. Consult with your doctor about the severity of your condition.

In order to fight inflammation you should try eating foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. These acids help your body produce hormones to lessen your inflammation. Some of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids are in coldwater fish, such as wild salmon, sardines, trout and mackerel. There are also some plants that are reasonably good sources of omega-3. If you’re not the fish-eating type (my dad and sister) try having some walnuts, flaxseed or canola oil.

            Immune System

Obviously being sick isn’t something many of us strive for. That’s why a healthy immune system is so important. Our immune system help protect us against illness by destroying things like harmful bacteria and viruses. However, we have to take care of our immune system if we want it to take care of us.

There are many foods that can help us boost our immune system. Garlic is one of the best. For a very long time (think ancient Egypt) garlic has been revered for its healthy benefits. Green tea is also a great, simple thing to add to a meal, like dinner, to help protect against all those things looking to make you sick. Green tea has also been linked to cancer-prevention. Additionally, broccoli is an extremely good immune booster. Containing vitamins A, C, E, anti-cancer agents, and strong antioxidants, there aren’t many things that are more effective at boosting your immune system than broccoli.

            How to Prevent Bad Breath

Bad breath can be very embarrassing and can happen to anyone. However, not everyone knows how to prevent it. The good news is, there are many, easy ways to help keep you breath fresh.

            1. Brush your teeth – Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice, everyday. Make sure to brush your tongue as well. Along with brushing make sure to floss twice a day as pieces of food may get stuck in between your teeth and will cause bad breath. Also, using mouthwash after brushing and flossing is a very popular and effective way of preventing bad breath. This is probably the most common and easy way to prevent bad breath, but you must do it at least twice a day, every day.

            2. Go to your checkups – Visiting your dentist on a fairly regular basis (every 6 months or so) is a great way to avoid bad breath. Your dentist may notice something that could be causing your bad breath, not to mention the cleaning you get at the dentist is always a great thing for your breath.

            3. Make sure you fix any dental problems –
Some dental problems cause bad breath. Things like tooth decay, gum abscesses, and abscessed teeth must be treat. After treatment you may notice your breath has improved significantly.

            4. Parsley – Try chewing parsley after eating a meal. Parsley is a known breath freshener and is a great, simple way to help keep your breath fresh after eating.

            5. Quit Smoking – Smoking is a very large contributor to bad breath and even yellow teeth. You must quit smoking if you really want to get rid of your bad breath. Also, you may want to quit simply for other health reasons, smoking causes things like cancer.

            6. Avoid foods that cause bad breath – Avoid certain foods that you know will cause bad breath, such as onions, alcohol, most foods that are spicy, and sadly coffee. These foods can contribute to your bad breath.

            7. Drink water – Drinking water will keep you hydrated and will help prevent your mouth from becoming dry. Also, try breathing through your nose as much as possible as a dry mouth can be the main cause for most people’s bad breath.

            8. Pop a mint – If you’re out somewhere and realize your breath may not be its freshest pop a mint. However, try to make sure you have sugarless mints. Mints that have sugar in them will cause to plaque to build up.

Hopefully some of the tips are useful and help you prevent your bad breath.

15 Interesting Facts about Your Health and Your Body

Take a look at these 15 interesting facts about your health and your body. Some might make you laugh, some might make you cry, and some might make you sit back and think about the meaning of life. Well maybe not the meaning of life thing, but you might be amazed at some of the things many of us don’t know.

            1. If you rolled a lung from a human body out flat, it would be the roughly the size of a tennis court.

            2. It takes only 17 muscles to smile, but 43 to frown.

            3.
Motorists who talk on cell phones are more impaired than drunk drivers with blood-alcohol levels exceeding .08!

            4.
One quarter of the bones in your entire body are found in your feet!

            5.
Perspiration is odorless. The reason for the odor you produce when you sweat is due to the bacteria on the skin that creates an odor.

            6. Redheads require more anesthesia to become unconscious than people with other hair colors.

            7. A fetus develops fingerprints at only eighteen weeks!

            8.
A man once sued his doctor because he survived his cancer longer than the doctor predicted. If I were the one with cancer, I would probably be too happy to even think about suing the doctor.

            9. There are about 400 different kinds of microbes that live on and in the human body.

            10.
Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. However, you probably shouldn’t do this to lose weight as you’ll suffer from severe brain damage long before you begin to notice the weight you’ve lost.

            11.
Contrary to popular beliefs, chocolate does not cause acne.

            12.
Fingernails grow almost 4 times faster than toenails!

            13. The aorta, which is the largest artery in the body, has nearly the diameter of an average garden hose.

            14. The average human body contains enough fat to make seven bars of soap. This always reminds me of the movie “Fight Club” when the two main characters make their own soap.

            15.
The human heart creates enough pressure to squirt blood 30 ft. Maybe those Tarantino movies are realer than I thought. Either way they still rock.
