What Everyday Foods Help Control Cholesterol?

High cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is found over your entire body. It aids in the production of cell membranes, some hormones, and vitamin D [1]. There are two kinds of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein). LDL is often referred to as the “bad” cholesterol because it is difficult for the human body to break down its structure. On the other hand, HDL is often considered the “good” cholesterol which the human body consumes to remove cholesterol and plaque from the blood. A large build-up of LDL can cause the arteries to be blocked, which causes chest pain and heart problems.

There are many ways a person can lower their LDL levels and one of the simplest ways is by improving their daily diet. It is vital that a person with high LDL avoid foods high in saturated fats. Foods such as soy, avocadoes, salmon, garlic and spinach are all examples of ingredients that are good for someone trying to reduce their LDL levels.

For people who have high cholesterol, salmon and other cold water fish are especially effective, as they help lower LDL levels and increase HDL levels. Fish are also high in protein and a dinner staple for people with high LDL levels. Also, substituting the kind of oil used in cooking can make a difference in controlling cholesterol. Using avocado oil or olive oil is a much better option than using vegetable oil. Making slight variations like these makes a significant impact on your health as a whole.

Can Prescription Medication be Used to Treat Leukemia?

Searching for a drug to treat a medical Medical equipment stethoscope, pen and medication over documentscondition has always been a very standardized procedure. It involves looking for a set of symptoms that indicate a condition and a finding an appropriate drug to treat the condition. However, some conditions are very specific to a patient. This has been the premise of a recent branch of drugs called precision medicine.

Precision medicines are drugs that cure certain conditions and are specific for each and every case. The main idea revolving the concept of precision drugs is finding appropriate medicines that precisely cure a patient’s unique condition.

For instance, “doctors know a drug called Gleevec (Imatinib) works well in treating leukemia only when the cancer cells have one particular genetic makeup. So, rather than treat everyone with leukemia using Gleevec, doctors test people for that specific genetic mix and give the drug only to those who have it.” [1]

What is the Effect of Color on Medicine?

Colors

It is common for one to associate emotions with color in many areas of our lives. Colors can affect our mood, alter our perception of products, and affect our actions. For instance, it is common to associate the color red with anger, white with tranquility, blue with sadness, and yellow with happiness.. However, people can react differently to each color depending on their individual experience with a color.  For instance, a person who commonly associates deep blue can have positive emotions because it reminds them of the ocean and relaxation.  Another person may find the same blue  dark and depressing. The effects of color psychology have a significant impact in medicine. It is common for a person to anticipate the quality and level of relief they experience when they take a drug that is the same color as a prior medication, even if the drug is different.

A common scenario is when patients taking anti-depressants of a dark color do not experience relief, whereas patients taking brightly colored anti-depressants do. It has been noticed that a patient is much more likely to exceed the recommended dose when taking a dark colored anti-depressant because they feel that they need more of this medication in order to acquire some relief. This also affects a wider audience that experiences a similar phenomenon when perceiving sleeping pills. When people take a pill that is a soft blue color, it is much more likely to have a better perceived effect than a dark colored pill.

It is fascinating how the human mind places an importance on color when compared to other factors that have a more tangible effect on taking medication. This is a concept that is taken into account when manufacturing your medication.

4 Things to Remember When Purchasing Prescription Medications

pharmacy worker talking by phone and typing and computer keyboardIt is important that safety measures are taken when dealing with prescription medications because they are usually stronger forms of medicines meant to be used very precisely. Furthermore your doctor writes you a very specific prescription which needs to be filled out very accurately in order for you to receive the correct medication.

As a patient, there are four simple steps you can take to ensure that receiving prescription medication is a safe experience:

  1. Make sure that your entire medical history is accurate and both your pharmacist and family physician have access to the exact same information.
  2. Inquire about storage techniques for your medication. This is vital because certain medications are sensitive to heat or cold, which causes the drugs to lose effectiveness.
  3. Make sure that you receive a syringe or a measuring cup if you are purchasing liquid medication. It is not a good idea to take an approximate amount with household utensils, as even small changes in some dosage can have serious side effects.
  4. If there are children in your household, make sure that medications are kept out of their reach. Ask for child-resistant lids for all bottles of medication to reduce the danger risk. Do not be afraid to ask the pharmacist any additional questions. Their job is to counsel you on how to use these medications and it is highly important that you are well informed on how to use your medication safely.

7 Ways to Prevent Tylenol Overdose in Children

DD-05142016-0O1A6416Acetaminophen is contained in over 100 medications that are sold over the counter.  It is commonly purchased under the brand name Tylenol, but it can be found in common over-the-counter medication for pain, cough and fever.

An acetaminophen overdose usually occurs when adults usually take more than the recommended dose or unintentionally take acetaminophen in different forms.  This usually occurs when patients do not realize that there is acetaminophen in other medications and taking them together in a short period of time can result in an overdose.

Children can be victims of acetaminophen overdoses, usually because of their caretakers. Giving a child too much acetaminophen or forgetting the dose they have already taken can be a cause. It is common that children overdose when they mistake acetaminophen for candy, or drink large amounts of syrup all at once. Here are some ways an overdose can be prevented:

  • Keep all of your medicines in locked cabinets or out of reach of children.
  • Keep a track or log of the doses and medications you give your child. Make sure you share this information with your children’s caregivers.
  • Read all labels of your children’s medications and monitor which medications have acetaminophen in them. Ensure that the doses in each are safe to take at the same time.
  • Use your child’s weight to determine the dose of acetaminophen and make sure that the formula is meant for the same age group.
  • Consult a pharmacist to determine if the form of OTC acetaminophen you are giving your child is appropriate.
  • Measure a child’s dose of acetaminophen with a dropper when given in liquid form.
  • Avoid giving your child or taking the medication yourself if you have chronic pain and it is not going away with a simple OTC medication. Consult a doctor on which medication is more appropriate to take to get better results

Implementing these prevention methods can make a significant impact towards preventing an overdose in children.  Make sure to educate your child about the dangers of drugs that seem harmless.

How to Save On Generic and Brand Name Drugs

Rosuvastatin is available as a generic drug in local pharmacies, but many consumers still tend to purchase the brand name drug, Crestor, at lower prices online. It is important that consumers trust the drugs they are consuming.  As a result, third-party independent resources like PharmacyChecker.com are used to ensure the quality of online pharmacies and their drugs.

Pharmacychecker.com is an excellent source to explain why drugs are cheaper online.  They help consumers by comparing prescription drug prices and verifying legitimate online pharmacies.  The website explains that international laws, marketing costs, and higher bargaining power for pharmaceutical companies in the United States results in higher drug prices. The website also gives a detailed account of where Crestor and Rosuvastatin are produced, how they are verified, and other reasons to why they are more affordable online.

How to Choose Drugs: Over the Counter vs Prescription

When shopping at your local pharmacy there are wide variety of drugs that are intended for curing or treating specific conditions or diseases.  Some of these drugs are known as over the counter drugs (OTC); these can be purchased off the shelf in stores and they do not require a doctor’s prescription.  On the other hand, prescription drugs are prescribed by a doctor. They can only be purchased at pharmacies and are only intended to be used by the prescribed patient.

pharmacy choosingOften, people face a dilemma when choosing between prescription and OTC medications. OTC medications are available for common conditions such as pain, fever, or allergies. It is best to consult a family physician when considering medication for a new condition or if you are experiencing symptoms that you have never experienced before.

For instance, OTC antihistamines such as Reactine may be sufficient if you are experiencing seasonal allergy symptoms. It is always a good idea to consult a pharmacist when purchasing OTC medication for the first time because they can confirm if you are making the right choice and educate about the side effects for that specific medication. Typically, OTC medications have fewer side effects because they are available to general public – a medication with serious side effects will most likely be sold as a prescription drug. For example, antihistamines such as Clarinex and Xyzal are prescription medications because they have significant side effects such as muscle pain, nausea, drowsiness, or diarrhea.

Here is a list that compares OTC and prescriptions drugs:

 Prescription Drugs

OTC Drugs

– Requires a doctor’s prescription
– Can only me dispensed/sold from a pharmacy
– Prescribed for specific use and only intended for one person
– Usually more powerful that OTC medicines
– Harmful if misused
– Requires medical diagnosis from a licensed practitioner
– Does not require a prescription
– Sold off the shelf in stores
– Use not limited to one person (can be applicable to more than one person)
– Not as powerful as OTC medicines and usually have fewer side effects
– Harmful if misused
– Generally based off of self-diagnosis

How Your Child Is At Risk For Drug Abuse

Portrait of a smiling little girl lying on trampolineBy all appearances, Jessica is a normal, healthy twelve year-old girl.  She enjoys hanging out with her friends, plays soccer after school, and has started to pay attention to boys.  She is well-behaved and nobody would think that she is at risk of abusing prescription drugs.  One afternoon, she overhears her parents talking about how her aunt’s medication is causing her to rapidly lose weight.  She recalls how some of her friends are much thinner and more popular.  The next time she visits her aunt’s house, Jessica steals a few pills and starts the vicious cycle of drug addiction.  Afraid that her parents or aunt find out about the medication, she performs an online search for “cheap online pharmacy” and easily places an order for several hundred pills that are delivered right to her doorstep.

This case is not unbelievable with the advent of rogue online pharmacies that ignore safe practices for distributing prescription drugs.  Not all adolescents use drugs for the purpose of “getting high”; many common causes include dealing with stress or anxiety, pain relief, weight loss, increased concentration, and boredom.  These teenage drug abusers can be hidden from plain sight, which is why education of the dangers of drug abuse is an important topic for all parents to discuss with their children.

Understanding Online Pharmacies

Legitimate online pharmacies are similar to local pharmacies in their due diligence, as they check for valid prescriptions, require a medical history, and distribute safe prescription drugs.  Certification in using third-party organizations to verify their dedication to safety, such as the Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA), or PharmacyChecker.com, are ways to ensure that the online pharmacy is safe and legitimate.

Some online pharmacies are illegal operations that adolescents can stumble upon through an online search.  Illegal prescription drugs can be only an online form and credit card away.  These illegitimate sources not only circumvent the law by ignoring safe practice, but participate in distributing harmful drugs.  Their drugs often contain incorrect dosages, which is a danger in itself, but also have been known to contain toxic substances such as rat poison, glue, or chalk.  Never order prescription drugs from an online pharmacy that does not require prescriptions.

How Can You Protect Your Children?

Open communication is the basis of understanding a child’s thoughts and actions.  If Jessica’s parents were aware about her concern with her physical appearance and weight, there are a number of solutions that could have prevented drug abuse.  Education about drugs and drug abuse is also an important first step in preventing drug addiction.

Learning about online pharmacies, both the legitimate and illegitimate businesses, can help understand the source of illegal prescription drugs.  Safe online pharmacies help provide many Americans with affordable medication and are a rising staple in the pharmaceutical industry.  Rogue online pharmacies are uncertified, dangerous sources of medication for all ages.
