Top 5 Foods for Kidney Health

March is National Kidney Month. In the spirit of promoting kidney health awareness, here are 5 foods that are beneficial to the health of your bean shaped organs.

1. Berries

This includes strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cranberries (pretty much anything that ends in berry). Berries are known to be high in antioxidants and a good source of vitamin C. Antioxidants are important in aiding your body from free radicals that can cause cellular damage. Vitamin C, paired with antioxidants, helps to improve the blood flow and blood pressure throughout your entire body.

2. Turmeric

Easily distinguishable by its poignant golden color, turmeric is considered a wonder herb that is often used in Indian cuisine. This herb aids in the treatment of many health conditions, including kidney disease. It has natural anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, and antibacterial characteristics (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17569205). With so many health benefits, this herb is a dream come true in helping your body stay healthy.

3. Probiotics

Probiotics are made up of good bacteria. They aid in kidney health by helping to eliminate toxins from our bodies, a job that is usually left up to the kidneys. The bacteria in probiotics are able to accomplish this by consuming waste products and excess fluids in our blood. What is the effect on your kidneys? It’s simple; with the probiotics taking over the kidney functions, the kidneys experience reduced stress.

4. Egg Whites

Adjusting one’s diet to aid their kidney health will help the body function so that it is providing maximum support to the kidneys. A good kidney diet includes protein that provides low levels of phosphorous. Egg whites are the perfect solution for protein in a person who is suffering from kidney disease.

5. Parsley

Parsley is a natural diuretic, meaning it can help increase the amount of urine leaving your body. Why is this good for your kidney health? The more urine that leaves your body, the more sodium and phosphorous that leaves too. When your kidneys are not in good shape, parsley can help them do their job.

11 Ways for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution

1)Plan Before The New Year – Making a New Year’s resolution on December 31 won’t be much help. Your resolution should be well thought out way before the New Year arrives. It should be a goal you have thought out and are motivated to accomplish.

2)Outline You Plan – Arranging how you will accomplish your goal and what steps you are going to take will help in the long run. Not having any idea of where to begin your goal will just make you want to put it off more. If you are looking to lose weight, plan out some healthy meals you would be interested in and create a schedule for a good time to work out. Create manageable portions to help you reach your goal.

3)Stick To One Goal – Having ten different resolutions will create problems so nothing will be accomplished. Choosing one goal that you know you will stick to and are motivated to achieve will end in success. Guaranteed failure would come from trying to do everything at once.

4)A List Of Pro’s and Con’s – Making a list that shows all the good that can come out of the accomplishment of your goal can create self motivation. Thinking on the better side will add more to the Pro’s side, giving you all the motivation you need. Keep the list nearby in case you’re thinking of eating that extra slice of pizza.

5)Start With The Small Picture – Taking small steps towards a bigger goal will make your resolution seem easier. Be realistic. Losing 20 pounds in the first week of the New Year is not that great of a start. Starting off with eating right and exercising will get you to lose those 20 pounds in no time. The difference will come with more motivation as the year goes on.

6)Get Support – Not being afraid to let people know what you are trying to achieve will be all the more help. The more people you tell the more support you have if you fall behind. Getting tips and finding help in others is nothing to be scared of.

7)Begin At A Good Time – Starting right when the New Year begins may work; but the gloomy winter weather might get you down. Choosing the right time of year can be hard but you should start when you feel you are motivated enough. Of course don’t start in September when the year is almost gone. Start off in the spring when the weather is nice and the change in season will correspond with the change you wish to see in yourself.

8)Track Your Change – Seeing is believing. And seeing your progress as the year goes on will push you further towards your goal. As you go on to see how well you have done in keeping your resolution, more motivation will come to achieve that goal or even create an even bigger goal for yourself. Create check points during the year to help show how well you are doing.

9)Treat Yourself – Show yourself that through hard work comes happiness. Rewarding yourself every now and then does not hurt. It will give you something to look forward to. Keep the rewards small because in the end, those little rewards will be nothing compared to the huge difference in yourself.

10) Stick To It – Stay with your goal any way that you can. If you are trying to lose weight , find ways to avoid fatty foods or if you are looking to stop smoking, find a distraction from it. On average, it will take someone 21 days to create a habit out of something and 6 months for that habit to turn into a lifestyle. Sticking to your goal will become who you are, making it that much easier.

11)You Are In Charge – Don’t let anyone or anything get you down. You make your progress at your own pace, not anyone else’s. Don’t put yourself down when you get off track a little. Do what you can each day to make yourself happy. Show a strong sense of control of your goal otherwise you might just lose sight of what you wanted in the first place.

Quinoa: A Rising Health Food Star

Have you made a New Year resolution to eat more consciously? It can be challenging to start eating healthy food. Part of this adventure may include incorporating new foods into your diet. If this is part of your healthy eating plan, you may want to check out the new superfood on the scene: quinoa.

Quinoa (pronounced KEEN-wa) is the seed of a plant called Chenopodium. Chenopodium is related to plants such as beets, chard, and spinach, and its greens can be eaten. However, it is its seeds that are fast gaining popularity and recognition for their health benefits.

Though a relatively recent introduction to North America, quinoa has long been cultivated by indigenous people living in the Andean Mountains of Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. So what makes quinoa so great? Quinoa is an excellent source of nutrition. It contains all 8 essential amino acids, making it a rare example of a complete protein found in the plant world and a good choice for vegetarian and vegan diets. Quinoa is particularly high in lysine, an amino acid that is important for tissue growth and repair. The seed contains a good whack of the minerals magnesium, iron, copper, and phosphorous. These minerals may help ease the symptoms of migraines, diabetes, and atherosclerosis. Quinoa is a source of dietary fiber, which has been shown to reduce the risks of heart disease, colon cancer, and obesity. It is gluten-free and can be used in place of wheat, oats, and other grains. Quinoa is therefore a very good choice for those with celiac disease symptoms.

Quinoa can be found in many regular grocery stores, bulk food stores, at natural food stores. Though its beige and yellow varieties are most common, you can also find red quinoa, and pink, orange, and black colors of the seed. Its flavor has been described as “nutty,” with the seed itself having a creamy texture and its tail a slightly crunchy one when cooked. It is somewhat comparable to couscous or rice.

Quinoa is easy-to-cook and there are many quinoa recipes available such as salad recipes and for breakfast quinoa. When cooking with quinoa, it is best to wash the seeds well to remove the saponins that coat the seeds. It can be cooked in the same way as rice, (one-part grain to two-parts liquid) and there are even recipes for delicious-looking quinoa chocolate cake out there! Creativity and experimentation are what eating well is all about, and quinoa is one super-food you shouldn’t go without. Here’s to a healthy 2011!

Healthy Eating Tips for 2011

A very popular new year’s resolution seems to be to lose weight. Without the proper technique, losing weight and staying healthy can be quite a pain. If you are one of those people looking to lose weight this year, be sure to follow these tips.

–  Slow Down! Eating food too quickly can cause you to eat too much, and you can end up feeling sick because of it. Simply breathing in between bites can cut down your calorie intake drastically. In fact, it takes your brain approximately twenty minutes to realize that you have had enough to eat.

Eating at Restaurants. Restaurants are surprisingly generous with the amount they serve out, likely too generous. Most people don’t realize how large the portions are and they end up eating it all. Be sure to understand how much food you are actually eating, no one wants to waste money, or food; so be sure to bring some home for another meal. Furthermore, alcohol is a bad choice of beverage with dinner as it tends to make people feel hungry. If it you can’t help yourself, limit alcohol intake to one or two glasses.

Office Food. If you work at an office, there is a good chance someone will bring in food for co-workers to enjoy, but beware of these nice gestures. Cakes, cookies, and other goodies can account for up to twenty of the pounds you may put on this year. Be sure to keep an eye on how much of these treats you enjoy!

Snacking. Be sure to keep an eye on how much of this you do. For example, sitting in front of the TV with a bag of chips will lead to weight gain. If you’re in the mood for an unhealthy snack, grab a bowl and decide for yourself what the right portion is. Be sure to remember that even though you are dieting, you can still indulge a little bit from time to time.

Challenge yourself! Try setting some realistic goals for yourself; whether it be losing a certain amount in a set time period, or eating less of a certain type of food. Having a competition with yourself or even a friend is also a great way to keep yourself on track.

Lastly, remember that eating healthy doesn’t have to mean not enjoying your food. Try looking up a new healthy recipe every once in a while. Who knows, you might just surprise yourself!

5 Foods that Help Build Muscle

Many of us strive to reach the look of some of our favorite celebrities, but very few ever achieve that goal. We try new, sometimes unhealthy or even downright dangerous diets, in order to look like the people often seen in magazines and on television.

However, this is often impossible, as people in magazines often have their pictures changed digitally and we have to go to work in order to support ourselves and our families. While getting rock hard celebrity abs isn’t always possible, there are certain foods you can eat that will help you build muscle faster.

  1. Eggs – A great source of protein can be found in eggs. Not to mention, there are vitamins and nutrients in eggs that help you stay healthy.
  2. Salmon – Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in great supply in salmon. The protein and omega 3 fatty acids will help build muscle and speed up your recovery time.
  3. Almonds – Almonds help prevent free radical damage after you workout which means your muscles should recover faster. Almonds are a great way to help you build muscle because they’re a great snack food and you can just throw them into a zip lock bag and take them just about anywhere with you.
  4. Beef – Probably the most well known source of protein is beef. Beef also contain iron and zinc and help supply energy for your body. Try to look for lean cuts of meat in order to cut down calories.
  5. Water – Considering the majority of your body is made out of water, it makes sense that staying hydrated will help build muscle. If your body is hydrated properly, the process of building muscle, protein synthesis, will occur much more quickly than if you were dehydrated.

The one thing to remember is to always take things in moderation. Having too much or too little of something can actually have negative effects on the body. Try to always eat a balanced and healthy diet in order to keep your body strong. Physical exercise is also key to building muscle. You have to get out there and lift some weights, go on runs, etc in order to actually use these foods. Without exercise you’re just putting more calories into your body without every using the energy they give you.
