What is Betapace?

Betapace (sotalol) is a non-selective antiarrhythmic beta-blocker. This medication is prescribed for persons with abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia, and ventricular fibrillation.

This drug is available in tablet formulation with three strengths: 80 mg, 120 mg, and 160 mg.

How does Betapace work?

When the heart experiences irregular electrical activity, the atria reduces its contractility in pumping blood to the ventricles, resulting in an abnormally rapid cardiac rhythm.

When Betapace medication is used correctly and absorbed into the bloodstream, it inhibits the stimulation of beta-adrenergic receptors at the nerve endings, which affects heart activity and blood circulation. It allows normal blood flow in and out in the upper and lower chambers of the heart, which results in a slower heartbeat and helps return to normal heart rhythm.

Dosage of Betapace

The recommended dose for adults is Betapace 80 mg tablet two times a day. This dose can be gradually increased up to 120 mg tablet twice daily for atrial fibrillation or flutter. In the case of ventricular arrhythmia, a 160 mg to 320 mg tablet should be used in two or three doses.

For children, the dosage will depend on their height and weight. The suggested starting dose for two years old and above is 1.2 mg/kg three times per day. This dose can be increased to a maximum of 2.4 mg/kg.

The frequency and dose of sotalol depend on your health condition, age, weight, and tolerance.

Before using sotalol, read all drug instructions and information carefully. Use the medication according to the directions on the prescription label or as prescribed by your doctor. You can ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about how to use this drug or if you need medical assistance.

As prescribed, take this medication orally. It is usually taken with or without regard to food or on an empty stomach.

To avoid missing a dose, take it regularly, and making a note in your calendar may help you remember not to forget a pill. If you didn’t take sotalol for the day, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and follow your regular schedule.

Do not change your sotalol dosage. Changing the dosage and frequency of the medication is not recommended because of the increased risk of experiencing side effects. Consult your doctor if you need to make any adjustments.

Keep an eye out for any allergic reactions, such as rashes, hives, swelling of the face and lips, throat tightness, or difficulty breathing, when taking this drug. You should seek emergency medical attention as soon as these signs and symptoms emerge.

Inform your doctor about your medications and vitamins, especially when taking antacids, as they may cause drug interaction.

Sotalol is usually initiated in a hospital setting for three days as this can cause irregular heartbeat. There should be close monitoring to avoid life-threatening situations from happening.

This drug can also lower your blood pressure levels. Make sure to monitor your blood pressure as this drug can cause hypotension.

Do not abruptly stop taking sotalol. Doing so can increase your likelihood of experiencing a heart attack.
