Indications
Betamethasone topical is employed for the therapeutic management of itching, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling, inflammation, and discomfort of various skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema. Classified as a corticosteroid, betamethasone functions by stimulating endogenous substances within the skin, thereby reducing swelling, redness, and itching.
Uses and Dosage
Betamethasone is available in various formulations, including ointment, cream, lotion, gel, and aerosol, with different strengths designed for skin application, as well as a foam specifically for scalp use. Typically the medication is applied once or twice daily. Betamethasone should be used precisely as directed, without exceeding or reducing the prescribed dosage frequency.
Unless instructed otherwise by your doctor, refrain from applying betamethasone to areas of the body not indicated for treatment or employing it to address other skin conditions.
During the initial two weeks of treatment, you should observe an improvement in your skin condition. If your symptoms do not ameliorate within this timeframe, contact your doctor for further guidance.
To apply betamethasone topically, take a small quantity of the ointment, cream, solution, gel, or lotion and gently spread it in a thin, even layer over the affected skin area, gently massaging it in.
When using the foam on your scalp, part your hair, apply a small amount of the medication to the affected area, and gently massage it in. You may proceed with your regular hair washing routine, but avoid doing so immediately after applying the foam.
Be aware that betamethasone foam is flammable. Exercise caution by staying away from open flames, fire, and refraining from smoking during the application and for a brief period afterward.
This medication is exclusively intended for topical use on the skin. Avoid contact with your eyes or mouth, and refrain from swallowing betamethasone topical. Unless specifically directed by your doctor, avoid using it in the genital and rectal areas, as well as in skin creases and armpits.
If you are applying betamethasone to a child’s diaper area, refrain from using tightly fitted diapers or plastic pants, as they may exacerbate potential side effects.
Consult your doctor before applying other skin preparations or products to the treated area.
Do not wrap or bandage the treated area unless advised by your doctor to do so, as this may heighten the occurrence of side effects.
Contact your doctor if the treated area worsens or if you experience symptoms such as burning, swelling, redness, or the emergence of pus.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- burning, itching, irritation, stinging, redness, or dryness of the skin
- acne
- unwanted hair growth
- skin color changes
- bruising or shiny skin
- tiny red bumps or rash around the mouth
- small white or red bumps on the skin
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- severe rash
- redness, swelling, or other signs of skin infection in the place where you applied betamethasone
Caution
Prior to initiating betamethasone treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to betamethasone, other corticosteroids (such as hydrocortisone or prednisone), or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of poor blood circulation, diabetes, or immune system disorders.
Avoid using betamethasone if there is an existing infection or open sore in the designated treatment area.
Long-term or extensive application of corticosteroid medications can, in rare cases, diminish your body’s ability to respond to physical stress. Prior to undergoing surgery, emergency treatment, or if you experience a severe illness/injury, notify your doctor or dentist if you have been using this medication recently or within the past few months.
Although unlikely, prolonged use of this medication in children may potentially affect their growth temporarily. Schedule regular check-ups with the doctor to monitor the child’s height.
During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is unknown whether this drug passes into breast milk. Similar medications have been found to transfer to breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using betamethasone.
