What is Bumex?

The Bumex generic name is bumetanide. It is a highly efficient and potent loop diuretic (water pill). This medication helps relieve symptoms associated with circulatory overload, such as edema and shortness of breath in patients suffering from congestive heart failure, nephrotic syndrome, or liver disease.

Bumetanide can be given alone or in combination with other drugs.

How does Bumex work?

An excessive amount of extracellular fluid or fluid retention makes it difficult for your heart to pump out blood throughout the body resulting in shortness of breath, lung crackles, or swelling in the extremities.

When this drug is administered correctly and absorbed into the bloodstream, this medicine works by interfering with the renal activity. It inhibits the active reabsorption of sodium (Na), potassium (K), and chloride (Cl) in the ascending loop of Henle. This action alters the transfer of these electrolytes in the proximal tubule, which leads to diuresis or increased urine volume excretion. Hence, it decreases extracellular fluid, cardiac output, blood pressure, or swelling.

Bumex Dosage

The dosage of this medication depends on your condition, age, and tolerance to the pill. There are three strengths available: 1 mg, 2 mg, and 5 mg.

Usually, the recommended daily dose is 0.5 mg to 2 mg as a single dose. The frequency can be increased depending on your response to the treatment two or three times a day, separated into four to five hours intervals. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 10 mg per tablet.

Changing the dosage and frequency is not recommended because of the increased risk of experiencing side effects. Bear in mind not to alter your dosage and frequency unless instructed by your doctor and pharmacist.
