Indications
Carboxylmethylcellulose is an ophthalmic medication indicated for the alleviation of dryness and irritation in the eyes. Dry eyes can result from various factors, including exposure to wind, sunlight, heating or air conditioning, prolonged computer use or reading, as well as specific medications. Eye lubricants serve to maintain adequate moisture in the eyes, safeguard them against injury and infection, and alleviate the symptoms associated with dry eyes, such as burning, itching, and the sensation of a foreign object in the eye.
Uses and Dosage
The frequency of application for eye drops is typically as needed, allowing for their use as frequently as necessary.
Ointments, on the other hand, are generally applied 1 to 2 times daily, depending on individual needs. If opting for once-daily ointment use, it is advisable to apply it before bedtime for optimal effectiveness.
When utilizing multiple types of eye medication, such as drops and ointments, it is recommended to allow a minimum interval of 5 minutes between applications. Prioritizing the use of eye drops before ointments ensures proper entry of the drops into the eye.
For individuals who wear contact lenses, remove them prior to using most eye lubricants. Consult your doctor or pharmacist to determine the appropriate time to reinsert your contact lenses. Certain eye lubricants, containing polysorbates, can be compatible with wearing contact lenses.
To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:
- Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
- Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
- Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
- Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
- Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
- Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
- Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
- Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
- Wash hands to remove any residual medication.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- itching or redness of your eyes
- watery eyes
- blurred vision
- sensitivity to light
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- severe burning, stinging, or eye irritation after using the medicine
- eye pain
- vision changes

Following the application of this product, temporary blurring of vision may occur. Refrain from activities such as driving, operating machinery, or engaging in tasks that require clear vision until you regain clear vision and can perform such activities safely.
During pregnancy, discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication with your doctor.
It is unknown whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while taking this medication.
