Indications
Ophthalmic cyclosporine is prescribed for the purpose of enhancing tear production in individuals afflicted with dry eye disease. This medication belongs to a class of pharmaceuticals known as immunomodulators, which exert their effects by reducing ocular inflammation, thereby facilitating tear secretion.
Uses and Dosage
Ophthalmic cyclosporine is available in both solution and emulsion forms for ocular administration. It is typically applied to each eye twice daily, with a recommended interval of approximately 12 hours between administrations. Consistency in timing is advised when instilling cyclosporine eye drops, adhering to the prescribed schedule.
Adhere to the prescribed usage of cyclosporine eye drops, refraining from altering the dosage or frequency without medical guidance.
Cyclosporine eye drops are intended solely for ocular use and should not be ingested or applied to the skin.
Cyclosporine eye drops are supplied in both single-use vials, designed for one-time use, and multi-dose bottles that can be utilized multiple times. In the case of single-use vials, the contents should be promptly applied to one or both eyes immediately upon opening.
Exercise caution to prevent the dropper tip from coming into contact with the eye, fingers, face, or any other surfaces. If the tip does inadvertently touch another surface, it may introduce bacteria into the eye drops.
To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:
- Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
- Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
- Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
- Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
- Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
- Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
- Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
- Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
- Wash hands to remove any residual medication.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- burning, itching, stinging, redness, or pain of the eyes
- eyelid swelling
- eye discharge
- blurred vision or other vision changes
- feeling that something is in the eye
- headache
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- hives
- itching
- face, throat, eyes, and tongue swelling
- shortness of breath
Caution
Prior to initiating the use of this medication, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any known allergies you may have, including allergies to the specific medication or other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that have the potential to elicit allergic reactions or other complications.
Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, with particular attention to any ongoing or recent eye infections.
Following the application of this drug, temporary blurred vision may occur. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring clear vision until you can safely do so.
During pregnancy, the utilization of this medication should be limited to cases where it is clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
The transfer of this drug into breast milk is not yet known. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding to evaluate potential risks and benefits.
