It can also be utilized in the treatment of outer ear infections that may arise after certain types of ear surgery. Neomycin and polymyxin fall under the category of antibiotics, working together to halt the growth of bacteria. Hydrocortisone belongs to the class of corticosteroids. Its mechanism involves activating natural substances in the ear to diminish swelling, redness, and itching. This combination medication aims to provide effective relief by addressing both the bacterial infection and the associated inflammatory symptoms.
Uses and Dosage
Neomycin, polymyxin, and hydrocortisone otic combination is available in both solution (liquid) and suspension (liquid with undissolved particles) forms for instillation in the ear. Typically, it is applied to the affected ear(s) three to four times a day, and the treatment duration may extend up to 10 days. Administer neomycin, polymyxin, and hydrocortisone otic combination at approximately the same times each day.
Utilize neomycin, polymyxin, and hydrocortisone otic combination precisely as directed. Avoid using more or less than prescribed or increasing the frequency beyond the doctor’s recommendation.
Neomycin, polymyxin, and hydrocortisone otic combination is specifically designed for ear use and should not be applied to the eyes.
You can anticipate improvement in your symptoms within the initial days of neomycin, polymyxin, and hydrocortisone otic combination treatment. If there is no improvement after one week or if your symptoms worsen, contact your doctor promptly.
To use the eardrops, follow these steps:
- Hold the bottle in your hand for 1 or 2 minutes to warm the solution.
- Shake the bottle well.
- Lie down with the affected ear upward.
- Place the prescribed number of drops into your ear.
- Be careful not to touch the tip to your ear, fingers, or any other surface.
- Remain lying down with the affected ear upward for 30-60 seconds.
- Repeat steps 1-6 for the opposite ear if necessary.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- burning or stinging after instilling the medication
- skin thinning
- small white or red bumps on the skin
- acne
- unwanted hair growth
- skin color changes
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- hearing loss, which may be permanent
- skin redness, swelling, or itching
- skin dryness or scaling
- decreased urination
- swelling of the legs, ankles, or feet
- unusual tiredness or weakness
Caution
- Before initiating this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have allergies to neomycin, polymyxin, hydrocortisone, aminoglycoside antibiotics (such as gentamicin, tobramycin), or corticosteroids (such as dexamethasone, prednisone), or if you have any other allergies. Inactive ingredients, including preservatives like sulfites and thimerosal, may be present in this product, potentially causing allergic reactions or other complications.
- Disclose your medical history, particularly other ear problems (such as a hole in your eardrum, middle ear infection), or an ear infection caused by a virus (such as herpes simplex, varicella) before using this medication.
- This medication should be used during pregnancy only if deemed necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- The passage of this medication into breast milk is uncertain. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding to evaluate potential risks and benefits.
