Indications
Fluticasone topical is prescribed to mitigate inflammation and alleviate symptoms such as itching, redness, dryness, and scaling related to diverse dermatological conditions, notably psoriasis and eczema. Fluticasone belongs to a pharmacological class known as corticosteroids and exerts its therapeutic effects by stimulating the activation of endogenous substances within the skin to diminish swelling, redness, and itching.
Uses and Dosage
Fluticasone topical is available in the form of ointment, cream, and lotion for application onto the skin. Typically, it is applied once or twice daily. Strictly follow the prescribed usage of fluticasone without applying more or less than instructed, and refrain from exceeding the recommended frequency as advised by your doctor.
Avoid applying the medication to areas of the body not specified or employing it for treating other skin conditions unless specifically instructed by your doctor.
Significant improvement in your skin condition should be observed within the initial two weeks of treatment. If symptoms do not ameliorate during this period, contact your doctor.
To apply fluticasone topical, utilize a small quantity of cream, ointment, or lotion to cover the affected area of skin with a thin layer and gently massage it in.
This medication is intended for external use on the skin only. Prevent any contact with your eyes or mouth, and refrain from swallowing it. Unless directed by your doctor, avoid using it on your face, genital and rectal areas, as well as in skin folds and armpits.
Unless instructed otherwise by your doctor, do not wrap or bandage the treated area, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
Unless directed by your doctor, refrain from using fluticasone topical in a child’s diaper area, and avoid using tight-fitting diapers or plastic pants, as these actions may heighten the occurrence of side effects.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- itching, burning, irritation, redness, or dryness of the skin
- acne
- tiny red bumps or rash around the mouth
- small white or red bumps on the skin
- unwanted hair growth
- bruising or shiny skin
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- severe rash
- hives
- redness, swelling, or other signs of skin infection in the place where you applied fluticasone
Caution
Prior to initiating the use of fluticasone, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies, including allergies to fluticasone itself or other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients, such as formaldehyde, that can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other adverse effects.
Before using this medication, disclose your complete medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of poor blood circulation, diabetes, or immune system disorders.
Corticosteroids have the potential to worsen existing skin infections and make them more challenging to treat. Inform your doctor if you have a current skin infection or if your condition does not show improvement.
In rare cases, prolonged or extensive use of corticosteroid medications on the skin can hinder the body’s response to physical stress. Inform your doctor or dentist before undergoing surgery, emergency treatment, or if you experience a significant illness or injury. This includes disclosing the use of this medication or any recent use within the past few months.
While unlikely, prolonged use of this medication may temporarily impede a child’s growth. Regular check-ups with a doctor are recommended to monitor the child’s height.
During pregnancy, the use of this medication should only be considered when the benefits outweigh the potential risks. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is uncertain whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using this medication.
