Indications
Adapalene is indicated for the treatment of acne in individuals aged 12 years and above. Belonging to the class of retinoid-like compounds, adapalene exerts its therapeutic effect by inhibiting the development of pimples beneath the skin’s surface.
Uses and Dosage
Adapalene is available as a prescription medication in various forms, including gel, solution, lotion, cream, and pledget (a single-use medicated swab). Over-the-counter adapalene is typically available as a gel for topical application.
It is recommended to apply adapalene once daily before bedtime. Adapalene should be applied precisely as directed, avoiding excessive or insufficient application frequency, as prescribed by your doctor or indicated on the packaging. Applying excessive amounts or using it more frequently than recommended will not accelerate or enhance results, but it may lead to skin irritation.
Adapalene effectively manages acne but does not provide a cure. Acne may initially worsen during the early weeks of treatment, and it may take approximately 8 to 12 weeks or longer to experience the full benefits of adapalene. During the initial stages of treatment, adapalene may bring forth previously unseen pimples to the skin’s surface. Continue using adapalene even if acne worsens or significant improvement is not immediately observed.
Avoid applying adapalene to sunburned, broken, or eczema-covered skin. If any of these conditions are present, refrain from applying adapalene until the affected skin has fully healed.
Exercise caution to prevent contact of adapalene with your eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina. In case of accidental contact with the eyes, it may cause redness, irritation, or swelling.
During the initial 2-4 weeks of treatment, you may experience dryness or irritation of the skin. If your skin becomes stinging, burning, or irritated at any point during the treatment, consult your doctor. They may advise using a moisturizer to alleviate dryness or adjust the application frequency accordingly.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- redness
- scaling
- dryness
- burning or stinging
- pain at the application site
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- hives, itching
- shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, or throat
Caution
Prior to using adapalene, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, including allergies to adapalene itself, vitamin A-related drugs, or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can potentially cause allergic reactions or other complications.
Before initiating treatment with this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of eczema.
Adapalene may increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Limit your sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and take precautions against weather extremes such as wind or cold that may irritate the skin. Regularly apply sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience sunburn or develop skin blisters or redness.
Wait until your skin has fully recovered from a sunburn before resuming the use of adapalene.
While using this product, refrain from undergoing electrolysis, waxing, or using chemical depilatories for hair removal in the treated areas.
Since this medication is absorbed through the skin and may potentially harm an unborn baby, it should not be handled by pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant.
Inform your doctor if you are currently pregnant or intending to conceive. Avoid pregnancy while using adapalene, as it may pose risks to the unborn baby. In the event that you become pregnant, promptly consult your doctor regarding the risks and benefits of continuing the medication.
The passage of this drug into breast milk is not well understood. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using adapalene.

Should I moisturize before or after I use Differin Cream?
It is best to apply Differin first to give your skin the best chance at absorbing the full dose. Once the medication is completely rubbed in and your skin is dry to touch, you can apply a moisturizer.
Can I use Differin Cream all over my face?
Yes, you can and should apply adapalene (Differin) to your entire face unless your provider told you otherwise. This medication works best for facial acne when applied to your entire face.
