Indications
The combined administration of triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide is indicated for the management of hypertension and edema, characterized by the accumulation of excessive fluid within bodily tissues. This medication falls within the diuretic class, commonly referred to as “water pills.” Its mechanism of action involves facilitating renal excretion of surplus water and sodium, consequently promoting their elimination from the body through urine.
Uses and Dosage
Follow the prescribed instructions provided by your doctor when taking this medication orally, with or without food. Typically, it is taken once daily in the morning.
Avoid taking this medication within four hours of your bedtime to minimize the need to urinate during sleep.
If you are also taking specific cholesterol-lowering medications such as cholestyramine or colestipol (bile acid-binding resins), ensure that you take this product either at least four hours before or at least four to six hours after consuming those medications.
The appropriate dosage of this medication will be determined based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment.
Consistently use this medication to derive the maximum benefits from it. To assist with adherence, take it at the same time each day. Continue taking this medication even if you feel well, as individuals with high blood pressure often do not experience noticeable symptoms.
Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens, such as an increase in your blood pressure readings.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- headache
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- rash
- hives
- itching
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- pain in the upper stomach area
- swelling or tenderness of stomach area
- upset stomach
- fever
- unusual bruising or bleeding
- loss of appetite
- yellowing of skin or eyes
- flu-like symptoms
- feelings of numbness, tingling, pricking, burning, or creeping on the skin
- inability to move arms and legs
- slow or irregular heartbeat
Caution
Prior to initiating this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to triamterene or hydrochlorothiazide, as well as any other allergies you may have. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can elicit allergic reactions or other complications.
Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of diabetes, gout, elevated potassium levels in the blood, kidney disease (including kidney stones), liver disease, lupus, or skin cancer.
This medication may induce dizziness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify this effect. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can safely do so.
Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can heighten the risk of dizziness or dehydration. Report any prolonged episodes of diarrhea or vomiting to your doctor. To prevent dehydration, ensure an adequate intake of fluids unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
If you have diabetes, this product may impact your blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar regularly as instructed and share the results with your doctor. Adjustments to your diabetes medication, exercise regimen, or diet may be necessary.
This medication can influence your potassium levels. Prior to using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
This medication may increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Prolonged use may also elevate the risk of skin cancer. Limit your sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and utilize sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Promptly notify your doctor if you experience sunburn, skin blisters/redness, or observe new or changed moles/skin lesions.
Elderly individuals may exhibit heightened sensitivity to the effects of this medication, particularly dizziness or elevated blood potassium levels.
During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when clearly necessary, as it may pose a risk to the unborn baby. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is unclear whether triamterene is excreted in breast milk. Hydrochlorothiazide, although present in breast milk, is unlikely to cause harm to a nursing infant. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your doctor for advice.

How long does it take for Dyazide to work?
Onset of diuresis with Dyazide takes place within 1 hour, peaks at 2 to 3 hours, and tapers off during the subsequent 7 to 9 hours.
Does Dyazide make you tired?
Possible but rare side effects from Dyazide include weakness and fatigue.
