Description
Hyzaar is a drug that combines losartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (sometimes called an ARB blocker) which reduces blood pressure and increases blood flow by preventing blood vessels from constricting. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt, causing fluid retention.

Hyzaar Uses
- Hyzaar medication is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
- This is also used to reduce the risk of stroke in some heart disease patients.
Hyzaar Dosage
Hypertension
- Once a day, take 12.5 to 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide and 50 to 100 mg of losartan.
- Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg-Losartan 100 mg orally once a day is the maximum dosage.
Severe Hypertension
- Initial treatment: Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg-Losartan 50 mg orally once a day; if blood pressure remains uncontrolled after 2–4 weeks, the maximum dose may be started.
- Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg-Losartan 100 mg orally once a day is the maximum dosage.
Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Hypertension
- Losartan monotherapy is the first line of treatment; if blood pressure remains uncontrolled, this medicine may be added.
- Add-on therapy: Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg-Losartan 50 mg orally once a day; if blood pressure remains uncontrolled, start with hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg-losartan 100 mg orally once a day, followed by hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg-losartan 100 mg orally once a day, as needed.
