Indications
Indomethacin belongs to a group of medications known as NSAIDs. It is used to alleviate moderate to severe pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness associated with various forms of arthritis. It is also employed to treat shoulder pain stemming from bursitis or tendinitis.
Indomethacin immediate-release capsules and suspension are also utilized to manage acute gouty arthritis, which entails sudden and intense joint pain and swelling caused by a build-up of specific substances in the joints. The medication works by blocking the body’s production of a substance that triggers inflammation, fever, and pain.
Uses and Dosage
Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking this medication orally, typically 2 to 3 times daily with a full 8-ounce glass of water.
After taking the medicine, avoid lying down for at least 10 minutes. If you experience stomach discomfort, consume the medicine with food, milk, or an antacid.
Your medical condition and response to treatment determine the dosage, with children’s doses also based on their weight. Use the lowest effective dose of this medication for the shortest possible duration to minimize the risk of side effects, including stomach bleeding. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or frequency, and continue taking it as directed for chronic ailments like arthritis.
For some conditions such as arthritis, it may take up to 4 weeks of regular usage to see the complete advantages.
If you are taking this medication on an as-needed basis, take it when you first feel pain for the most significant benefit. If you wait until the pain worsens, the drug may not be as effective.
Inform your doctor if your condition deteriorates.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- unexplained weight gain
- shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- swelling in the abdomen, ankles, feet, or legs

- blisters
- rash
- itching
- hives
- swelling of the eyes, face, tongue, lips, throat, or hands
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- hoarseness
- pale skin
- fast heartbeat
- excessive tiredness
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- lack of energy
- nausea
- loss of appetite
- pain in the upper right part of the stomach
- flu-like symptoms
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- cloudy, discolored, or bloody urine
- back pain
- difficult or painful urination
- blurred vision or other problems with sight
Caution
Inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, including allergies to indomethacin, aspirin, or other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or celecoxib. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other issues.
Before taking this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, particularly if you have asthma, bleeding or clotting problems, nasal polyps, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, stomach/intestinal/esophageal problems, or have had a stroke.
NSAID medications such as indomethacin can cause kidney problems, especially if you are dehydrated, have heart failure or kidney disease, are an older adult, or are taking certain medications. To prevent dehydration, drink plenty of fluids as directed by your doctor, and contact your doctor immediately if you experience changes in urine output.
This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Alcohol or cannabis use can exacerbate these symptoms. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in any activities that require alertness until you can do so safely.
Indomethacin can increase the risk of stomach bleeding. Regular use of alcohol or tobacco, particularly when combined with this medication, may increase the risk of stomach bleeding. Refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking.
This medication may increase sun sensitivity, so limit your exposure to sunlight and avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen when outside. Contact your doctor if you develop sunburn or skin redness/blisters.
Elderly patients may be at greater risk of stomach/intestinal bleeding, kidney problems, heart attack, stroke, and mental/mood changes when using this medication.
Children may be more vulnerable to the side effects of this medication, particularly serious liver problems. Caution is recommended when using this medication in children.
Before using this medication, women of childbearing age should speak with their doctor about the potential risks and benefits. This medication may harm an unborn baby and cause issues during normal labor/delivery. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy from 20 weeks until delivery. If your doctor prescribes this medication between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. This medication should not be used after 30 weeks of pregnancy.
This medication passes into breast milk and may have negative effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
