Indications
Isosorbide immediate-release tablets are prescribed for individuals with coronary artery disease, a condition characterized by the narrowing of blood vessels that supply blood to the heart, to manage angina. Isosorbide extended-release tablets and extended-release capsules are employed for angina management in individuals with coronary artery disease.
Belonging to the class of medications known as vasodilators, isosorbide functions by inducing relaxation in the blood vessels. This relaxation lessens the workload on the heart, consequently reducing the demand for oxygen by the heart. This medcation is used solely for angina prevention and cannot be used to treat an ongoing episode of angina.
Uses and Dosage
Isosorbide is available in three oral forms: regular tablets, extended-release (long-acting) tablets, and extended-release capsules. The regular tablet is typically taken two or three times daily, whereas the extended-release tablet and capsule are taken once daily.
Swallow the extended-release tablets or capsules whole and avoid crushing, chewing, or dividing them. Take isosorbide precisely as prescribed, avoiding any deviation in dosage—neither increasing nor decreasing the amount or frequency without consulting your doctor.
Isosorbide is effective in managing chest pain, but it does not provide a cure for coronary artery disease. Continue taking isosorbide even if you feel well, and never discontinue its use without consulting your doctor.
Over time, isosorbide may become less effective or lose its potency with frequent use. To mitigate this, your doctor will devise a dosing schedule that allows for a daily period without Isosorbide exposure. If you experience an increase in the frequency, duration, or severity of chest pain episodes during treatment, promptly contact your doctor for further evaluation and guidance.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- difficulty breathing or swallowing
Caution
Prior to initiating this medication, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, including allergies to this medication or similar drugs like isosorbide mononitrate and nitroglycerin. Disclose any other allergies you may have, as this product may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Before commencing treatment, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have experienced recent head injuries, anemia, low blood pressure, dehydration, or any other heart-related issues, such as a recent heart attack.
This medication may cause dizziness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate this dizziness. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can do so safely.
For older adults, they may be more susceptible to experiencing side effects of this medication, especially dizziness and lightheadedness, which can increase the risk of falls.
During pregnancy, use this medication only when it is clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor before proceeding with the treatment.
It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding to make an informed decision.

FAQ
Does Isordil lower blood pressure?
Isordil can cause your blood pressure to drop somewhat. It’s usually not a problem for most people unless you drink alcohol or take other medications that can also lower your blood pressure.
Is isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil) the same as nitroglycerin?
While both Isordil and nitroglycerin are known as nitrate vasodilators, they are not the same medication. Isordil works slowly to help prevent chest pain.
