Description

Indications

Atenolol is prescribed either on its own or alongside other medications to manage high blood pressure. It is also employed to prevent angina and enhance survival rates following a heart attack. Atenolol belongs to a group of drugs known as beta blockers. Its mechanism of action involves the relaxation of blood vessels and the reduction of heart rate to enhance blood circulation and lower blood pressure.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication by mouth, with or without food, as prescribed by your doctor, typically once daily. To avoid nighttime urination, take this medication at least 4 hours before bedtime. If you have any questions about your dosing schedule, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Consuming apple juice or orange juice may hinder the full absorption of atenolol by your body. It’s best to refrain from drinking these juices within 4 hours of taking this medication unless otherwise instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.

The prescribed dosage is contingent on your medical condition and how you respond to treatment.

Consistently use this medication to derive the maximum benefits. To help you remember, take it at the same time every day.

If you’re also taking certain cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol, take this product either at least 2 hours before or at least 4 hours after these medications.

It may take several weeks before you experience the full benefits of this medication. Keep taking it even if you feel well, as most individuals with high blood pressure don’t exhibit symptoms.

Inform your doctor if your condition doesn’t improve or worsens, for example, if your regular blood pressure readings remain elevated or increase.

Caution

Prior to using this product, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, particularly to atenolol or chlorthalidone, or if you have other allergies. Inactive ingredients in this product can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before starting this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, specific heart rhythm issues, gout, lupus, respiratory problems, circulatory issues, untreated mineral imbalances, severe allergic reactions requiring treatment with epinephrine, or a particular muscle/nerve disorder.

This medication may induce dizziness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can exacerbate this dizziness. Refrain from activities that demand alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you can do so safely.

Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can lead to dehydration, increasing the risk of dizziness or lightheadedness. Report persistent diarrhea or vomiting to your doctor, and ensure you maintain adequate fluid intake unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.

This medication might lower your blood potassium levels. Inquire with your doctor about adding potassium to your diet or the possibility of a potassium supplement prescription.

This product may prevent the rapid or forceful heartbeat typically experienced when blood sugar levels drop too low (hypoglycemia). The risk is greater if you have diabetes, are experiencing vomiting, fasting, or irregular eating habits. Other hypoglycemia symptoms, such as dizziness and sweating, remain unaffected by this medication.

For individuals with diabetes, this product may complicate blood sugar level control. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly as directed by your doctor. Alert your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst and urination. Your doctor may need to make adjustments to your diabetes medication, exercise routine, or diet.

This medication may heighten your sensitivity to sunlight. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning beds and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing while outdoors. Notify your doctor if you experience sunburn or skin blisters/redness.

Elderly individuals may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly dizziness.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Do not become pregnant while using this medication, as atenolol may pose risks to an unborn baby. In the event of pregnancy, promptly discuss the medication’s risks and benefits with your doctor.

Atenolol and chlorthalidone can be excreted into breast milk, potentially harming a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while taking this medication.
