Indications
This combination product comprises two active ingredients: naproxen and sumatriptan. It is designed to alleviate headaches, pain, and various migraine symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Naproxen is classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and is employed for pain relief. Sumatriptan belongs to a group of medications known as triptans, which influence a specific natural substance called serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for constricting blood vessels in the brain, and sumatriptan may also provide pain relief by affecting certain nerves within the brain.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication orally as soon as you notice the onset of a migraine, following your doctor’s instructions, and with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters). After taking the drug, refrain from lying down for at least 10 minutes. To minimize the risk of stomach discomfort, consume this medication with food, milk, or an antacid. Do not break, crush, or chew the tablet.
The prescribed dosage is determined based on your medical condition, age, and response to the treatment. If your symptoms do not improve, do not take additional doses of this medication without consulting your doctor. If your symptoms are only partially relieved or if your headache returns, you may take another dose at least two hours after the initial one. Do not exceed two doses within a 24-hour period.
If you have a heightened risk of heart problems, your doctor may conduct a cardiac assessment before initiating this medication. Additionally, they may instruct you to take your first dose of this medication in their office or clinic to monitor potential serious side effects, such as chest pain.
If you find yourself using migraine medications on 10 or more days per month, it is possible that these drugs could exacerbate your headaches. Avoid using medications more frequently or for longer durations than prescribed. Inform your doctor if you feel the need to use this medication more frequently, if it becomes less effective, or if your headaches worsen.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- acid or sour stomach
- belching
- dizziness
- dry mouth
- feeling hot
- feeling of warmth
- heartburn
- indigestion
- lack or loss of strength
- muscle tightness
- nausea
- redness of the face, neck, arms, and occasionally, upper chest
- sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
- stomach discomfort, upset, or pain
- sudden sweating
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, “pins and needles”, or tingling feelings
- chest discomfort or pain
- fast, irregular, pounding, or racing heartbeat or pulse
- jaw, neck, or throat pain
Caution
Prior to using this product, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, such as allergies to naproxen, sumatriptan, aspirin, other NSAIDs, or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medication, especially if you have a history of asthma, circulatory issues, blood disorders, nasal polyps, specific types of headaches, heart problems, liver disease, seizures, stroke or “mini-stroke” (transient ischemic attack), throat/stomach/intestinal problems, or swelling (edema, fluid retention).
Certain factors can increase your risk of heart problems. Inform your doctor if you have any of these factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, a family history of heart disease, being overweight, smoking, being postmenopausal (for women), or being over 40 years old (for men).
The use of NSAID medications like naproxen can sometimes lead to kidney problems. The risk is higher if you are dehydrated, have heart failure or kidney disease, are an older adult, or are taking certain medications. Follow your doctor’s instructions to stay well-hydrated and promptly notify your doctor if you notice changes in your urine output.
This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Combining it with alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Refrain from activities requiring alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you can safely do so.
This medicine may lead to stomach bleeding. Regular consumption of alcohol and tobacco, especially in conjunction with this medicine, can heighten the risk of stomach bleeding. Limit alcohol intake and quit smoking. Seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist for further information.
This product contains sodium. Notify your doctor if you are adhering to a sodium-restricted diet before using this medication.
This medication may heighten your sensitivity to sunlight. Reduce your sun exposure, steer clear of tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Promptly inform your doctor if you experience sunburn or skin blistering/redness.
Older adults may face a greater risk of stomach/intestinal bleeding, elevated blood pressure, kidney problems, heart attacks, and strokes while using this drug.
Women of childbearing age should engage in a discussion with their healthcare provider(s) regarding the benefits and risks of this medication before use. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medication may harm an unborn baby and lead to complications during labor and delivery. Its use is not recommended during pregnancy from the 20th week until delivery. If your doctor deems it necessary to use this medication between the 20th and 30th weeks of pregnancy, it should be at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible. This medication should not be used after the 30th week of pregnancy.
These drugs can pass into breast milk and potentially have adverse effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

FAQ
Can I take ibuprofen with Treximet?
Using ibuprofen together with naproxen is generally not recommended. Combining these medications may increase the risk of side effects in the gastrointestinal tract such as inflammation, bleeding, ulceration, and rarely, perforation.
Does Treximet make you sleepy?
One of the most common reported side effects of Treximet is tiredness.
