Indications
This combination medication is prescribed to address melasma, a skin condition characterized by the development of dark, patchy areas on the face, often concentrated on the cheeks and forehead. Melasma can be associated with hormonal fluctuations.
This product contains three distinct medications: Hydroquinone, which is a reversible skin bleaching agent; Tretinoin, a retinoid that enhances skin shedding; and Fluocinolone, a medium-strength corticosteroid that diminishes swelling, itching, and redness.
Uses and Dosage
Prior to usage, perform a patch test by applying a small amount of this medication to an area of unbroken skin. Examine the test area for any severe side effects within 24 hours. If you notice itching, redness, puffiness, or blistering in the test area, refrain from using this product and consult your doctor. If only mild redness occurs, you may proceed with treatment using this product.
Before application, gently cleanse your face and neck with a mild, soapless cleanser. Rinse thoroughly and pat your skin dry.
Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected area, including approximately 1/2 inch (1.5 centimeters) of normal-appearing skin surrounding the affected area, as instructed by your doctor. Typically, this is done once daily, approximately 30 minutes before bedtime. Gently and thoroughly rub the medication into the skin. Unless directed otherwise by your doctor, do not cover or wrap the area with bandages.
It’s important to note that this medication may heighten the sensitivity of treated skin areas to sunlight. Therefore, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, tanning booths, and sunlamps. When outdoors, even on cloudy or overcast days, apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to the treated skin areas and wear protective clothing.
If you experience dry skin due to the use of this product, you can apply a skin moisturizer in the morning after washing your face. Additionally, you may use moisturizer and cosmetics during the day while using this medication.
Take care to prevent contact with your eyes, inside your nose, or inside your mouth. If accidental contact occurs in these areas, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water. Seek prompt medical attention if severe irritation occurs.
To derive the maximum benefit from this medication, use it regularly and at the same time each night.
Significant improvement may take up to 4 weeks to become noticeable. Note that long-term use of this medication (more than 8 weeks) is not recommended without intermittent breaks. If your condition persists or worsens after 4 weeks of treatment, inform your doctor.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- blemishes on the skin
- burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, “pins and needles”, or tingling feelings
- pimples
- raised, dark red, wart-like spots on the skin
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- redness, peeling, drying, itching, or burning of the skin
- darkening of normal skin color
- irritated skin
- rash
Caution
Prior to using fluocinolone/tretinoin/hydroquinone, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, whether it’s to this medication, other corticosteroids, vitamin A-related drugs, or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients, such as sulfites, which could potentially trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
Before commencing this medication, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of asthma, open sores, or broken skin areas, especially on the face or hands, or if you have other skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
In some cases, excessive skin bleaching may occur, resulting in an undesirable cosmetic effect, especially for individuals with darker skin tones. For more details, seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
While it’s uncommon, prolonged use of corticosteroid medications may make it more challenging for your body to respond to physical stress. If you are scheduled for surgery, require emergency treatment, or experience a severe illness or injury, inform your doctor or dentist that you are currently using this medication or have used it within the past few months.
Although it’s unlikely, extended use of this medication in children may temporarily slow down their growth. Have your child’s height checked regularly by a doctor.
During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when absolutely necessary, as it may potentially harm an unborn baby. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It’s unclear whether these drugs pass into breast milk when applied topically to the skin. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
