Description

Indications

Colesevelam is prescribed in conjunction with proper diet and exercise to reduce cholesterol levels in individuals with high cholesterol in their bloodstream. By lowering cholesterol levels, the likelihood of heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks is reduced. In individuals with type 2 diabetes, colesevelam is used to reduce high blood sugar levels, thereby preventing kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems.

This medication belongs to the class of drugs known as bile acid-binding resins, which operate by removing bile acid from the body, leading to the liver producing more bile acid by using cholesterol, which lowers cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. The precise mechanism by which colesevelam reduces blood sugar levels remains unclear.

Uses and Dosage

Colesevelam is available in three forms: tablets, chewable bars, and powder to be mixed with a liquid and taken orally. Generally, tablets are taken once or twice daily with meals and a drink, while chewable bars and powder are taken once a day with a meal. Colesevelam should be taken exactly as directed, without taking more or less of it or taking it more frequently than prescribed.

In the case of the powder form, the entire contents of one packet should be emptied into a glass and mixed with 8 ounces of water, fruit juice, or a diet soft drink. The mixture should be stirred thoroughly, and the entire contents of the glass should be consumed, even if the contents appear cloudy and do not dissolve fully. Do not take the powder in its dry form.

If taking chewable bars, it is worth noting that each bar contains 80 calories.

While colesevelam can manage medical conditions, it does not cure them. Continue taking the medication even when feeling well and not to cease taking it without consulting a physician.
