Description

Indications

Metolazone is employed to alleviate swelling and fluid retention stemming from conditions like heart failure or kidney disease. It may also be prescribed as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other medications to manage high blood pressure. Metolazone belongs to a category of drugs known as diuretics, commonly referred to as “water pills.” These medications prompt the kidneys to decrease the levels of water and salt in the body by augmenting urine production.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication orally, with or without food, following your doctor’s instructions, typically once daily. The prescribed dosage depends on your medical condition and how you respond to the treatment.

If you ingest this medication too close to bedtime, you might need to wake up during the night to urinate. Take this medication at least 4 hours before your bedtime.

To derive the maximum benefit from this medication, use it consistently and at the same time each day, as directed. Even if you start feeling better, continue taking this medication. Most individuals with high blood pressure don’t experience noticeable symptoms.

Refrain from discontinuing this medication without consulting your doctor, as it may take anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks to observe a reduction in your blood pressure.

Cholestyramine and colestipol can interfere with the absorption of metolazone. If you are using any of these drugs, ensure you separate metolazone from cholestyramine by at least 4 hours and from colestipol by at least 2 hours.
