Zylet Uses

Zylet is a combination of ophthalmic anti-infective and steroid medication. Its generic name is tobramycin/loteprednol etabonate.  This medicine is used to treat eye inflammation caused by surgery, allergies, or bacterial infections, such as conjunctivitis and herpes zoster keratitis. Also, this drug prevents bacterial infection in people who are at risk.

How does Zylet work?

When there is a bacterial eye infection, the body’s inflammatory response is alerted as a defense mechanism. Blood vessels (veins, arteries, and capillaries) dilate, as a result, causing redness, itchiness, and inflammation.

Zylet ophthalmic suspension is a potent combination of two highly effective medications that work well together. Tobramycin is a strong aminoglycoside antibiotic. It inhibits bacteria from multiplying and growing by preventing them from producing nutrients necessary for survival. Loteprednol etabonate, a corticosteroid, reduces inflammation, redness, itching, and swelling by blocking the activation of inflammatory cells and mediators that constrict blood vessels.

Zylet Dosage

The number of times and the amount you are going to administer this eye medication will depend on the evaluation of your healthcare provider. It will depend on your current condition, age, and response to treatment. This eye drop is available in a 0.3% and 0.5% concentration.

The recommended daily dose of this ophthalmic solution is one or two drops with an interval of four to six hours. In the first 24 to 48 hours, the dosage is given every one to two hours, depending on your doctor’s instructions.

Do not exceed or change your dosage without first visiting your doctor. Doing so may raise the probability of side effects.

Best way to use Zylet

Read all medication instructions and information carefully. Use the drug exactly as directed. Consult your primary care physician or pharmacist if you have any questions about using this eye drop.

Before administering this medication, wash your hands and shake the solution. Make sure that the dropper is clean before putting it in your eyes.

Find your most comfortable position when using these eye drops. Begin by tilting your head backward. Pull the lower lid down gently to create a pocket, then look up. Make sure the dropper does not come into contact with your eyes. Squeeze one or two drops of Zylet into the pocket slowly and close your eyes for two to three minutes.

You can press the inside corner of your eye while your eyes are closed for at least one minute to keep the drops from entering your throat. Do not blink or wipe your eyes. After applying the medication, make sure to wash your hands.

If more than one drop is required, repeat these steps and wait five minutes before delivering the next drop. Avoid putting this medication in your mouth. Consult your doctor if there is no improvement after two days of using this medication.

Precautions

Be sure that you have fully disclosed your medical history before beginning this therapy to your doctor, especially if you have other eye problems (glaucoma or cataract).

Avoid using this medication if you are allergic to tobramycin, loteprednol etabonate, or other ingredients. Keep an eye out for any allergic reactions such as rashes, hives, swelling of the face and lips, throat tightness, or difficulty breathing when taking this drug. You should seek medical assistance as soon as these signs and symptoms develop.

Inform your doctor about the medications and products you are using to avoid drug interactions.

Temporary vision impairment may occur; avoid driving or operating machinery as these tasks require clear vision to avoid mishaps.

If you have chickenpox or herpes zoster, do not use this medication. Because this contains a steroid that lowers your immune system, doing so increases your chance of developing new or worsening infections.

Remove contact lenses before administering these eye drops. This medication can permanently stain your lenses. Wait for at least 15 minutes before putting it back, or do not wear contact lenses in the meantime while undergoing this therapy.

Remember not to touch the tip of the dropper to prevent contamination and infection.

Remember to keep this medication upright and at room temperature. Make sure to keep this eye drop out of the reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it okay to refrigerate Zylet?

Zylet should not be frozen; instead, it should be kept at room temperature and away from heat and light.

Can I use Zylet for the long term?

Zylet suppresses your immunological response to infection. Using this medication for a longer duration increases your risk of getting an eye infection. Long-term steroid use can also impact your intraocular pressure, leading to optic nerve damage and glaucoma. Consult your doctor for long-term plans.

Can I stop using Zylet if my eye condition improves?

Do not stop using Zylet unless your doctor advises otherwise. Doing so may increase your chance of a recurring infection which may be harder to treat.

Is it safe to wear contact lenses while using the Zylet solution?

After administering Zylet, wait for at least 15 minutes before putting back your contact lenses. It is best not to use it temporarily while using eye medication, as this can cause staining of your contact lenses.
