Description

Indications

Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve symptoms associated with arthritis, including inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain.

This medication is effective for the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Celecoxib is also used for the treatment of acute pain and menstrual cramps, as well as for the relief of symptoms during migraine headaches with or without aura.

It should be noted that celecoxib does not cure arthritis and will only provide relief as long as the individual continues to take it.

Uses and Dosage

Celecoxib is administered orally in the form of a capsule. The recommended frequency of consumption is once or twice daily. The consumption of celecoxib up to 200 mg per dose can be taken with or without food. Doses exceeding 200 mg should be taken with a meal. Take the medication at consistent times each day to aid in remembrance.

Strictly adhere to the instructions on the prescription label and seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist if any part is unclear. The prescribed dosage should be taken exactly as directed and deviations from the prescribed frequency or quantity should be avoided.

In cases where swallowing the capsule is difficult or if the medication is being administered to a child, the contents of the capsule can be sprinkled over a teaspoon of cold or room temperature applesauce. This mixture can be prepared in advance and stored in a refrigerator for up to 6 hours. Upon consumption, the mixture should be swallowed in its entirety, followed by a glass of water to ensure complete ingestion.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine:

  • back pain
  • change in sense of taste
  • gas
  • headache
  • heartburn
  • inability to sleep
  • loss of taste
  • pain or burning in the throat
  • stuffy or runny nose

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

  • cough
  • fever
  • skin rash
  • sneezing
  • sore throat
  • swelling of the face, fingers, feet, or lower legs

Caution

Prior to using celecoxib, inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies you may have, including to celecoxib, aspirin, other NSAIDs, or COX-2 inhibitors.

The use of NSAIDs, including celecoxib, may result in kidney problems, particularly in individuals who are dehydrated, have heart failure or kidney disease, or are elderly, or who are taking certain medications. To minimize the risk of dehydration and kidney problems, drink plenty of fluids and immediately inform your doctor of any changes in urine output.

Alcohol and tobacco use, particularly in combination with celecoxib, may increase the risk of stomach bleeding. To reduce this risk, limit alcohol and tobacco consumption.

When administering celecoxib to children with systemic onset juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, caution is advised as they may be at an increased risk for a serious bleeding/clotting problem. If sudden bleeding or bluish skin in the fingers/toes occurs, seek medical attention immediately.

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor as celecoxib may harm the fetus and affect normal labor/delivery. Use of this medication is not recommended during pregnancy after 20 weeks and, if necessary between 20 and 30 weeks, the lowest effective dose should be utilized for the shortest possible duration. Celecoxib should not be used after 30 weeks of pregnancy.
