Calcipotriol is utilized for the treatment of psoriasis, a skin condition characterized by the overproduction of skin cells. It can be employed either as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other medications, such as topical corticosteroids. Calcipotriol is within the category of medications referred to as vitamin D analogues. Its mechanism of action involves controlling the excessive production of skin cells commonly observed in individuals affected by psoriasis.
Uses and Dosage
Apply this medication exclusively on the skin. Before application, comb the hair to eliminate any scaly flakes. Apply the medication solely to the affected areas of the scalp and gently massage it in, typically twice daily or as instructed by your doctor.
Be cautious not to let any solution spread onto the forehead or unaffected areas. After application, wash your hands.
Avoid applying the medication on the face, in the eyes, nose, or mouth, or inside the vagina. If accidental contact occurs in these areas, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.
Adhere strictly to the prescribed frequency and duration of application. Overuse or prolonged application may heighten the risk of side effects.
Consistent use of this medication is vital for optimal results. To help with adherence, apply it at the same times each day.
Notify your doctor if your condition fails to improve or deteriorates. Improvement in your skin condition is typically observed after two weeks of treatment.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- burning, dry, irritated, peeling, or red skin
- face and scalp irritation (when the medication is transferred from another part of the body)
- itching, redness, and swelling of the skin
- increased skin sensitivity to sunlight
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- pain and skin discolouration at the application site
- small red bumps or white-headed pimples around hair follicles
- worsening symptoms of psoriasis
Caution
- Before initiating this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any existing allergies to it or any other substances. Inactive ingredients within the product may potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of high calcium or vitamin D levels (hypercalcemia/hypervitaminosis D).
- Be aware that this medication may heighten your sensitivity to the sun. Take precautions by limiting your time in the sun, avoiding tanning booths and sunlamps, and using sunscreen along with protective clothing when outdoors. Notify your doctor promptly if you experience sunburn or skin blisters/redness. Your doctor may recommend limiting or avoiding phototherapy while using this product—seek details from your doctor.
- Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly necessary. Discuss the associated risks and benefits with your doctor.
- The passage of this drug into breast milk is unknown. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
