Hydrochlorothiazide and losartan is administered to manage hypertension and reduce the likelihood of strokes in individuals with both high blood pressure and an enlarged heart. By reducing high blood pressure, this medication assists in preventing kidney problems, heart attacks, and strokes.

The medication is composed of two substances: losartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Losartan is classified as an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), which works by relaxing blood vessels to promote easier blood flow. Hydrochlorothiazide functions as a diuretic or “water pill” that stimulates urine production, allowing the body to eliminate excess water and salt.

Uses and Dosage

Follow the directions provided by your doctor when taking this medication, usually once daily with or without food.

If the medication causes you to urinate frequently, take it at least 4 hours before sleeping to avoid waking up to urinate.

If you are also taking cholesterol-lowering drugs (such as cholestyramine or colestipol), take losartan/hydrochlorothiazide at least 4 hours before or 4-6 hours after taking these medications.

The prescribed dosage is based on your medical condition and response to the treatment. Use this medication regularly to obtain maximum benefits. Take it at the same time each day to help remember.

Continue taking the medication even if you feel well, as most individuals with high blood pressure do not experience symptoms.

Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens, such as an increase in blood pressure readings.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • leg, knee, or back pain
  • muscle cramps or weakness
  • diarrhea
  • heartburn
  • decreased sensitivity to touch

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • hoarseness
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • chest pain

  • Prior to taking this medication, inform your physician or pharmacist if you are allergic to losartan or hydrochlorothiazide or have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive constituents that could cause allergic reactions or other complications.
  • Before using this medication, notify your physician or pharmacist of your medical history, particularly if you have had gout, kidney disease, liver disease, lupus, dehydration, a high level of potassium in the blood, or skin cancer.
  • This drug may cause dizziness. Alcohol or marijuana use can exacerbate this effect. Refrain from operating machinery, driving, or engaging in any activity that requires alertness until you can do so safely.
  • Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can heighten the possibility of lightheadedness or dehydration. Report prolonged vomiting or diarrhea to your doctor. To prevent dehydration, consume plenty of fluids unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
  • If you have diabetes, this medication may influence your blood sugar. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly as instructed and communicate the findings with your doctor. Your doctor may need to modify your diabetes treatment, workout routine, or dietary plan.
  • This medication can increase your sensitivity to the sun and raise your risk of skin cancer, particularly if used for an extended period. Minimize your sun exposure, avoid tanning beds and sunlamps, and wear protective clothing and sunscreen while outdoors. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience sunburn, skin blisters or redness, or notice any new or changed skin lesions or moles.
  • This product can affect your potassium levels. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium.
  • Older adults may be more prone to side effects from this medication, particularly dizziness and alterations in urine volume (kidney problems).
  • Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. You should not become pregnant while taking losartan/hydrochlorothiazide. This medication can harm a developing fetus. If you become pregnant, talk to your doctor right away about the risks and benefits of this medication.
  • It is unclear whether losartan passes into breast milk. Hydrochlorothiazide enters breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
