Cilazapril is prescribed either on its own or in combination with other drugs to manage hypertension. By reducing high blood pressure, it serves to mitigate the risk of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney issues. Additionally, it is utilized alongside other medications in the treatment of congestive heart failure. Cilazapril is classified under a category of drugs known as ACE inhibitors. Its mechanism of action involves the relaxation of blood vessels, facilitating smoother blood flow throughout the body.
Uses and Dosage
Take this medication orally, with or without food, as instructed by your physician, typically once or twice daily. Your dosage is determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Consistently use this medication to derive maximum benefit. Establish a routine by taking it at the same time(s) each day to aid in remembrance.
Continue taking this medication even if you are feeling well. Many individuals with high blood pressure may not experience symptoms of illness.
In the treatment of hypertension, it may require up to 2 weeks for the full therapeutic effects of this medication to manifest.
Notify your doctor if your condition deteriorates, such as experiencing an increase in routine blood pressure readings.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- abdominal pain
- constipation
- cough (dry, persistent)
- decreased appetite
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- flushing
- headache
- increased sweating
- joint pain
- muscle cramps
- nausea
- pins and needles sensation
- runny or stuffed nose
- trouble sleeping
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- unusual tiredness
- vomiting
- weakness
- dizziness
- lightheadedness
- fainting
- increased heart rate
- lupus-like symptoms
- skin rash (with or without itching, fever, or joint pain)
- chest pain
- difficulty swallowing or breathing
Caution
- Before taking cilazapril, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have allergies to it, other ACE inhibitors (such as captopril, lisinopril), or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of allergic reactions involving swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat (angioedema), fluid retention/swelling in the abdomen (ascites), blood transfusions, dehydration, untreated electrolyte imbalances, or liver disease.
- This medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate these effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely.
- To minimize the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, rise slowly from a sitting or lying position.
- Ensure adequate fluid intake while taking this medication to prevent dizziness. Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may lead to lightheadedness. Avoid strenuous exercise. Report prolonged diarrhea or vomiting to your doctor.
- This medication may elevate potassium levels. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium.
- Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, such as dizziness and increased potassium levels.
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. You should not become pregnant while using cilazapril, as it may harm the unborn baby. If pregnancy occurs, promptly discuss with your doctor about the risks and benefits of this medication.
- This medication may pass into breast milk and potentially cause adverse effects on a nursing infant. Breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication.
