Description

Indications

Trandolapril is prescribed either on its own or alongside other medications to address high blood pressure. This medication also plays a role in enhancing the survival rates of individuals with heart failure following a heart attack.

Classified as an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, trandolapril functions by reducing specific chemicals that constrict blood vessels. This action promotes smoother blood flow, enabling the heart to pump blood more effectively.

Uses and Dosage

Trandolapril is administered in the form of oral tablets. Typically, it is taken once or twice daily, with or without food. Establish a consistent schedule by taking the medication around the same time each day to help with adherence.

Adhere closely to the instructions on your prescription label, and seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist regarding any uncertainties.

Follow your doctor’s guidance precisely when taking trandolapril; avoid adjusting the dosage or frequency without their approval.

Your doctor may initiate treatment with a low dose and may gradually increase it, typically not exceeding once a week.

While trandolapril effectively manages high blood pressure, it doesn’t provide a cure. Continue taking trandolapril even if you feel well. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • cough
  • dizziness
  • muscle pain

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • hoarseness
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • fever, sore throat, chills, and other signs of infection
  • lightheadedness
  • fainting

Caution

  • Before initiating trandolapril, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, particularly if you are allergic to trandolapril, other ACE inhibitors, or any other substances present in the medication. Inactive ingredients in the product could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
  • Provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of allergic reactions involving swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat (angioedema), have undergone blood filtering procedures (like LDL apheresis or dialysis), or have a high level of potassium in the blood or liver disease.
  • This medication may induce dizziness, and the consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify this effect. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can do so safely.
  • Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may lead to dehydration and lightheadedness. Notify your doctor if you experience intense diarrhea or vomiting. To prevent dehydration, ensure you stay adequately hydrated unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
  • Trandolapril has the potential to increase potassium levels. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium.
  • Older adults may be more prone to the side effects of this medication, especially dizziness and elevated potassium levels.
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. You should not conceive while using trandolapril, as it may pose risks to an unborn baby. If pregnancy occurs, consult your doctor promptly to discuss the medication’s risks and benefits.
  • The passage of trandolapril into breast milk is uncertain. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your doctor for guidance.
